Rio Rancho officials fear a water shortage this summer amid a push to condemn Rio Rancho Utilities Corp. RRUC says shortages are unfounded and holds state permits to pump 13 543 acre feet yearly from the Rio Grande Basin.
Cibola High School committee recommends split sessions with sophomores juniors and seniors morning and freshmen afternoon to relieve overcrowding. Administration will review before presenting to the Board of Education. APS and Cibola officials offered no comment, and a decision hinges on district approval.
Rio Rancho faces a setback as the city attorney's office rejects most Graffiti Task Force proposals. The nine member panel's December recommendations, including fines up to 500 dollars and up to 90 days in jail, were deemed not legally permissible. Juveniles cannot be jailed, and parents are not liable for fines, under state law. Task force chair Tom Leyba called the memo disappointing as officials invited legal input but it was not utilized. The proposals also included license revocation for graffiti offenders, to be reviewed further on Graffiti page A.
Rio Rancho City Council places widening of Golf Course Road in the top five capital improvements, joining NM 528 Sara Road and Unser Boulevard projects. The Summary of Capital Improvement Needs is part of the MRCOG Overall Economic Development Program, noted on Road page A-10.
An estimated 6000 residents, including children and adults, will receive measles vaccines over the next two weeks in Rio Rancho. Dr. Mike Nelson notes 23 confirmed statewide cases in the Albuquerque metro, with three in Rio Rancho, as local health groups and schools organize immunizations. Measles can cause serious infections, and full immunity often requires two MMR doses.
