Rally for Officer Benner memorial postponed to June 28

A community rally originally set for 2 p m today at the Officer Gregg Benner memorial site on Pinetree Road has been moved to Sunday June 28. Organizer Paul Caputo cited deference to the Rio Rancho Police Department which has been very busy in the past two weeks. The event time and location remain the same.

Chick-Fil-A Donates to Benner Family in Albuquerque Drive

Chick-Fil-A at Cottonwood Corners in Albuquerque will donate 15 percent of proceeds on Monday to the family of fallen Rio Rancho Police Officer Gregg Benner. The donation applies to all breakfasts, lunches, and dinners from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on that day.

Rio Rancho officer Gregg Benner honored at Star Center funeral

Thousands filled the Santa Ana Star Center for the funeral of Gregg Nigel Benner a Rio Rancho police officer who died May 25 at 49. Rio Rancho Police Chief Michael Geier praised his dry humor and ready smile saying he was not as quiet outside work. Gov Susana Martinez and law enforcement from several states attended as mourners described Benner as a devoted officer and loving colleague.

Man gets 12 year sentence in chase and gunfire

Rio Rancho officers pressed for the maximum sentence for Chinh Huynh 23 convicted of leading a high speed chase toward Jemez Springs and firing at police in February 2014 Judge George Eichwald sentenced Huynh to 12 years after prosecutors sought the maximum for aggravated assault on an officer and related charges Officers cited the shooting death of Rio Rancho officer Gregg Nigel Benner as a deterrent in favor of a stiff sentence.
