Plague death in Bernalillo linked to rodent fleas in 1980
The 1980 Rio Rancho Observer reports a four year old Bernalillo girl died from bubonic plague likely due to a flea bite from an infected rodent. State lab confirmation followed fever and swollen lymph glands. Preventive meds were given to close contacts and medical staff.
