Rio Rancho Schools Close Monday for MLK Day Observed

Rio Rancho Public Schools campuses will be closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Day. District offices remain open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Tuesday middle and high schools run a two hour late arrival with students reporting two hours late and the day ending at the normal time. Late arrival days occur monthly for staff planning and training.

Rio Rancho Astronomy Club to Meet and View Sky

The Rio Rancho Astronomical Society holds its monthly meeting today at 7 p.m. at Rio Rancho High School in classroom PO 13. An observatory viewing follows at the campus hilltop observatory. Both events are open to the public.

Rio Rancho schools extend superintendent contract

Rio Rancho Public Schools extended Dr. Sue Cleveland's contract for three years as allowed by state law. Board President Carl Harper said the renewal shows the district’s confidence in her leadership. Cleveland noted she has not yet seen her latest evaluation but expects review soon, while board member Karla Walker stressed continuity amid upcoming board changes.

Puesta Elementary Opens New Playground After Delay

More than a year after Puesta del Sol Elementary opened, playground equipment was installed costing 68,596 dollars with 22,400 dollars from Sandoval County Commission. Students Morgan Allerton Matthew Jones Natalie Casaus and William Stock were photographed viewing the plexiglass domes atop the structures as the equipment officially opened to students Tuesday.

City may face suit over fatal DPS crash

The family of Abe Contreras, 23, who died after colliding with a Rio Rancho DPS cruiser on Sept. 18, may sue the city for wrongful death. The family, represented by Manuel Arrieta, awaits DPS findings and has hired a private accident reconstructionist as investigations continue.

Bency Named to State Land Planning Board

City Councilor Dave Bency will join a joint city state planning board advisory panel for a 650 acre parcel along US 550. The panel includes two land office reps, two city reps, and a development community appointee to be chosen by the four members.

Parks chief Herrera aims to pack meetings and rally volunteers

New Parks and Recreation Commission chairman Herrera pledges to fill meeting rooms to capacity with raffles and rewards and aims to recruit 4,000 volunteers to green eight acres at the Rio Rancho Sports Complex by July. He touts past successes turning a dusty field into a usable park with a modest budget and community volunteers.
