Fired deputies sue Sandoval County Sheriff in federal suit
Two former deputies Alfred Francia and Gennaro Ferrara sue Sandoval County Sheriff Pat White in Albuquerque federal court claiming unlawful termination for political reasons after White took office last January. They seek reinstatement with back pay and privileges plus $10,000 punitive damages each and a finding that their constitutional rights were violated. Francia, of Rio Rancho, had worked under former Sheriff Badacheg since 1974. Ferrara, of Paradise Hills, had served since 1975. Judge H Vearle Payne will hear the case in Albuquerque.

A Bernalillo County Deputy Sheriff and a patrol car were assigned to duty in Paradise Hills at the request of Para dise Hills Civic Association co president Jack Wohl. The daytime patrol runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with midnight to 8 a.m. covering Paradise Hills and the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute. The Paradise Hills Volunteer Sheriffs Unit will handle night and weekend patrols to cover high crime hours. Wohl cited residents’ concerns about rising crime.

Manhurt after car theft ends with injuries in Rio Rancho
Clarence King of Rio Rancho was injured when he jumped on his stolen car to block thieves. Thieves drove away, dragged him about 300 yards, then abandoned the car in Bernalillo County near Vista Sandia sanitarium. King, AMREP employee, suffered fractured ribs and knee injuries. No arrests yet.

Robert Whelan longtime Albuquerque resident and former AMREP Corporation director of administration services died after an illness. He served 28 years in the Navy and was a Rio Rancho Rotary Club member. Survived by wife Shirley and children Sandra Dibiasi Robert E. Whelan Jr and Jeffery plus six brothers and two grandchildren.
