Newcomers elected to RRPS board

Dr Reinaldo A Z Garcia defeated incumbent Jewel L Mall and David Folts to win the Rio Rancho Public Schools District 2 seat with 68 percent of the vote. Richard F Muenzer ran unopposed for District 4, receiving 146 votes and will replace Bob Herman. New board members will be inducted in March for four year terms.

Judge Denies Move to Block Council Vote on Golf Course Apartments

A group of Ashkirk Loop Superstition Drive residents challenged the Rio Rancho Golf and County Club plan, seeking a preliminary injunction and restraining order to pause a City Council vote on a 17.5 acre resort apartment proposal after the Planning and Zoning Commission approved a zoning refinement. Rio Rancho high schoolers may be bused to Del Norte

Rio Rancho freshmen slated for Cibola High School may instead be bused to Del Norte in Albuquerque. APS superintendent Peter Horoschak said a final decision awaits Cibola committee findings. He noted Cibola will keep current students and Rio Rancho students may transfer to APS schools to avoid overcrowding.

Rio Rancho school board approves weapons policy

Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education approved a policy to expel students for bringing guns knives look alike weapons or other dangerous instruments to school for a year. The vote follows federal rules requiring districts to have a weapon policy and included questions about look alike weapons and impact on disadvantaged youth. A closed hearing was held and no expulsions had occurred this year.
