Espanola Improved Chile Developed by NMSU Station

New Mexican researchers at NMSU released Espanola Improved, a pungent short season chile cultivar from Espanola Valley crossed with Sandia. Progeny tests at Las Cruces and Alcalde evaluated early maturity, high pungency, and red fruit yield. Matta notes 13 percent minimum red production and 6.28 by 1.45 inch fruit, with plant heights of 12 to 26 inches. Limited breeder seed is available through Alcalde center.

Santa Fe Opera Announces 1984 Subscription Series

The Santa Fe Opera offers a 1984 Season Subscription with five Wednesday or five Friday performances and opening night options. Veterans group installs new officers

The Service Veterans Council held its 1984 officer installation at American Legion Post 118 on January 21. Lloyd Marez received a distinguished service plaque from outgoing Chairman Anthony Eckel for 1983. Dencil Haycox was honored with a distinguished service award to Rio Rancho City. Wilber Hartranft of the Knights of Columbus presented patriotism certificates to four council commanders for daily flag service over the War Memorial.

Domenici Sees Budget Cuts In Reagan 1985 Plan

Senator Domenici chairing the Senate Budget Committee says the FY 1985 budget will need trimming in places. He argues a 13 percent defense rise is hard to justify with deficits, urges a compromise on defense spending, and touts potential $100 billion deficit reductions over three years. He notes New Mexico gains in funding for Brantley Dam, Las Nueve Acequias repairs, Rio Grande flood control work, SIRI and local grants, with full funding for CDBG and UDAG programs.
