Komadina fights TVI tax plan for Rio Rancho residents

State Sen. Steve Komadina pushes a bill to let Rio Rancho voters decide whether all residents or none should pay taxes to fund Albuquerque Technical-Vocational Institute. The measure faces hearings this week in Senate finance and rules, with potential action before the February adjournment. If defeated, the issue could reappear in the 60 day session next year. Residents south of Northern Boulevard currently fund TVI via tax parity, while those north do not. Even a future ballot on taxation would not remove existing bond obligations, including $4 million for a workforce center set to retire in August and a $35 million West Side campus bond due to retire in 2013.
