New Judge Sought For Sandoval County Bench
The New Mexico Legislature considers adding a judge to Sandoval County due to rising criminal and civil caseloads in the 13th Judicial District. The judiciary committee has approved House Bill 186 which would fund one new judge starting Jan 1, 2013, with support staff and new offices. Chief Judge Louis McDonald notes the county would benefit from two or more judges, but funding may limit to one. The district handles about 1,700 cases per judge annually, above the optimal 1,000, and caseloads have driven budget cuts and staff strain.
