The Office of the Medical Investigator says Norman Varela, 37, of Rio Rancho, died from a self related gunshot after being shot by Rio Rancho DPS officers following a three hour standoff at his North Hills home on October 1. Police had responded to reports of Varela threatening to harm himself. He stood in his driveway with a handgun to his head, later moved to the back door where officers, after identifying themselves, ordered him to drop the weapon. He then pointed the gun at officers, who fired in response.
