New Mexico starts Buckle Down seat belt blitz

Albuquerque police launch Operation Buckle Down from August 27 to September 9 with nearly 50 agencies including Rio Rancho PD. Captain David Velarde cites zero tolerance for not wearing seat belts, notes 73 percent of highway deaths last year were beltless, and aims for 85 percent compliance by year end 1995. DPS Advises Parents to Warn Kids of Dangers

Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety spokesman Ernie Wilson urges parents to discuss stranger danger with children as the new school year begins. Children should not talk to strangers or accept rides, report suspicious activity to teachers or parents, and text or call DPS at 891-7226 if needed. Benefit breakfast aids Rio Rancho DPS officer’s wife cancer fight

Knights of Columbus Council 6696 Rio Rancho hosts a benefit breakfast August 27 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Veranda Road hall to assist Yvonne Santistevan Manno, diagnosed with cancer, facing surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and rehab costs. Donations via Sunwest Bank or at DPS City Hall, account named Yvonne Manno.

Remains found in mesa grave identified

The remains of Clement Mercier of Albuquerque, born 1955 and a painter, were identified after bones were found in a shallow mesa grave near Idalia Road. Police investigated the homicide after trauma signs were found on the chest. Mercier had been missing about three years.
