RRPS outpaces NM on PARCC scores in latest data

Rio Rancho Public Schools outpaced most of New Mexico on PARCC results though English gains were mixed. Statewide 29.2 percent met math benchmarks and 38.3 percent in English, while RRPS showed declines in English and modest math progress, amid a statewide test format shift from paper to computer.

County Finance Meeting Turns Heated in Sandoval County

Tensions flared at the Sandoval County Board of Finance meeting as Treasurer Laura Montoya and commissioners clashed over responsibilities and communication. Chair Darryl Madalena called Montoya belittling and uncooperative as the session ran over an hour. Present were Rob Burpo and County Manager Phil Rios who proposed changes to the investment and deposit policy and redefined the investment committee role.

Roadside altercation leaves one dead in New Mexico

The incident occurred on NM 550 at Santa Ana Road when Lonnie Snyder, 63, allegedly fought with Richard Wall, 45. Wall fell into a canal and Snyder was arrested at his Bernalillo home on an open murder count. police say witnesses saw one man flee while the other remained in the water.

Police turn over report on child's shooting to DA

Rio Rancho police conclude a four month probe into a shooting that wounded a 5 year old and involved his 10 year old brother. No charges have been filed. report sent to the District Attorney for review. The siblings and a 9 year old sister were home alone. The 10 year old had shown a firearm to classmates on a school bus earlier.

Suspect in Benner slaying agrees to plea deal

Rio Rancho Officer Gregg Benner was killed on May 25 2015 after stopping a couple over a registration issue. Tabitha Littles 32 pleaded guilty to harboring a felon and conspiracy to commit armed robbery and will testify at Andrew Romero's trial. The deal calls for 16 years in prison plus 4% years of probation with potential withdrawal if she lies. Prosecutors say Littles and Romero, both Albuquerque residents armed with a Beretta, were in Rio Rancho to rob a burrito joint.
