Rio Rancho City Council votes 3 to 2 to defeat a plan for a seven member volunteer Ethics Board to oversee elected officials. City Attorney says state and federal rules already govern conduct and a board could create liability. Councilor Fine and others voice concerns over due process and rights in light of a prior censure.
Rio Rancho City Councilor Ken Cameron says he will file a civil rights lawsuit against the city the mayor and four councilors over a May 23 walk-out during a council meeting. He alleges violations of free speech due process and rights to witness testimony and counsel along with defamation and emotional distress.
Corrales Voluntary Fire Department Chief Earl Moore and Assistant Chief Cliff Byer resigned amid ongoing disputes with the village council. The Mayors and councilors clashed after a $10,222 Sandoval County grant was allocated without written use requirements, fueling morale issues and plans for department reorganization. Moore cited lack of council cooperation and said resigning would allow the department to move forward.
The Rio Rancho City Council approved joining the National Flood Insurance Program via FEMA. The move lets residents buy federal flood coverage through local agents, starting at 35 000 for structures and 10 000 for contents, with later increases after FEMA mapping.
Rio Rancho officials from city, state, school and county are pursuing a traffic signal at NM 528 and Corrales Road to ease congestion near Enchanted Hills Elementary/Mid School. Sheriff deputy traffic control has been suggested as a temporary measure while funding and approvals are sought, with costs estimated at 70 000 to 100 000 dollars and installation possibly six to seven months away.
