Rams blank Belen as state bid looms

Rio Rancho improved to 9-3 with a 4-0 win over Belen, tying Cibola for first in district SAAAA as two regular season games remain. Eighth grade pitcher Genevieve Kelly threw a two hit shutout with nine strikeouts, while Brittany Burtner's three run triple highlighted the offense. The Rams eye a district runner up finish and a state berth, led by coach Paul Kohman and key players Ashley Whittenberg and Jennifer Reed.

Solwick stars as Rams shut out Belen 10-0 in district tilt

Rio Rancho's Steve Solwick dominated on the mound as the Rams beat Belen 10-0 to move to 10-8 overall and 6-4 in district 5AAAA. Hohsfield hit a two run homer, Frye added a triple, and Rams freshmen Frost and Tafoya showed growing poise as they prepare to visit Los Lunas for a potential clinching win.

Cibola softball eyeing district title as final games loom

CHS rallied to beat Sandia while Sandia crushed Los Lunas, leaving Cibola two wins from a district crown and a state bid. The Cougars must win Tuesday against Eldorado and Thursday against Belen to secure top placement, with a 8-2 district mark tied with Rio Rancho and perilously close to dropping out of playoff picture with a loss. Audra Rast struggled in the Sandia game as CHS momentum swelled after a 14-0 win over Highland, but the Matadors surged early and dominated early innings.
