The building was set ablaze and Hughes died as deputies and Texas Rangers left him inside. Governor Moody denied ordering no shots, while local officials praised restraint. A broader campaign against Negro workers followed, with firings and leaflets pushing for terminations.
Port au Prince May 15 Eugene Roy banker and latest native tool of United States imperialism was inaugurated temporary president of Haiti. The new president aged 69 sits with the native bourgeoisie accused of betraying revolutionary aims of the Haitian masses and was elected by Borno's hand picked Hoover commission.
The council of state on April 21 shows the new president is as unpopular as the retiring Borno. Workers and peasants attempted to fire the Chamber of Deputies, and inauguration festivities were muted, signaling broad discontent.
