Negro Congressman Assured Election of Oscar De Priest
Oscar De Priest, a former Chicago Alderman, was chosen as the Republican nominee for Representative in Congress from Illinois First District to succeed the late Martin Madden. If elected, he would be the first Negro Congressman, a historic outcome many say seems certain. The First District, largely Negro in population, has long supported Madden, who was renominated after opposition to a Black candidate. The ward committee men from the district unanimously selected De Priest.
