The Senate confirmed the promotion of fleuterant Colonel aire tao ae of Cavalry on February 25 after a recommendation by President Hoover. Davis is the first colored officer to reach colonel on the active list since Col. John P. Green retired, with Charles Young having been retired for disability after reaching colonel in 1917.
In Los Angeles County Judge J A Smith ruled that Filipinos are of the yellow race and issued a writ prohibiting a marriage license for Tony Moreno and Ruby Robinson, pending higher court review. The decision cites three races white yellow black and contrasts with a 1921 county stance denying any racial category for Filipinos.
Ben J Davis former Georgia Republican committeeman was cleared of contempt linked to alleged court order violations in a dispute over Gate City Lodge No 4 Elks of the World. Judge Virlyn B Moore of Fulton Superior Court ruled the contempt charge unfounded after the hearing.
Five thousand worshippers packed Fifth Street Baptist Church for the installation of Dr. C G Scott as pastor. Dr. Graham of Philadelphia preached two sermons amid conversions and confirmations, while Dr. A W Brown and Si Mount Zion led a concurrent service. Scott’s popularity and experience suggest a strong ministry ahead for the church and its Richmond area in the two weeks of programs.
In Jackson Mississippi Dr. 8. D. Redmond a Republican leader and attorney won a second supreme court ruling reversing a $100 fine and 30 day jail term for contempt. The high court remanded the contempt citation to Hinds County chancery court and found the conviction lacked specific charges. The opinion notes the 8 o'clock court appearance notice and Redmond’s remarks about bias amid a disbarment attempt. The court previously reversed a disbarment order and sustained four specifications in his appeal.
Mrs. Clara Vaughan Coleman, formerly of Charlottesville now in Craigsville, is jailed for the murder of Mrs. Bessie Hollis Gray at the Goodall home. The shooting, in a jealous quarrel, used a .38 Colt pistol. Gray, formerly Miss Hattie Hollis of Augusta Springs, was to be buried at Craigsville after a large funeral at Aenon Baptist Church.
James Rol Jams earned praise from Fire Chief J B Plova after he crawled into a blazing room and dragged trapped George Stevenson through a side window to safety. A lamp had been overturned, flames cut off the door, and Stevenson was enveloped by fire as the rescue unfolded.
The Mt Calvary Baptist Church held a morning service with Rev. C. A. Dobbs and a Sunday afternoon Lord's Supper. A large Sunday school gathering, solos by Deacon Charles Terrell and John Robinson, and T. E. L. class led by Mrs. Rebecca Fleming were reported, with officers to be installed later. A sacred concert is set for tomorrow at 3:30 PM led by the Intermediate male class. Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church also had an inspiring Sunday service with Rev. O. B. Simms preaching and revival services planned for this month.
South Richmond notes invite readers to Union Baptist for a worship service led by Dr Gatland. The event features live choir music and a welcoming deacon board. Other churches are described as getting along nicely.
The Baptist Ministers Conference of Richmond and Vicinity unanimously backed the Planet expose on the Clearing House Number gamble and its effect on the community. They opposed plans undermining citizens while a young woman urged stopping the expose to protect white professionals who have reversed views. Dr. Mordecai W. Johnson, president of Howard University, declines comment on a notice of his appointment to a separate committee to study education in Haiti at the request of President Hoover. The panel includes Dr. Moton and others, with clerical staff led by Alphonse Henningburg. no sailing date set Yet. Rev. W H Skipwith to preach revival at Moore Street Baptist starting March 9.
Mrs H G Dunnavant, president of the Parent Teacher Association and Federation of Mothers Clubs of Richmond, will address the Nancy Hill School PTA next Tuesday March 11 at 3 PM. The public is invited. Secretary and President names appear in the notice.
Oscar E Butler formed the Bernard Gibbe Post No. 1190 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He organized ex service men into the post after deciding to unite local veterans to create a lasting organization. Early meetings were sparse, but Butler persisted and gained a core of five or six supporters.
The fourth year post under Corporal guard leadership shows a near hundred veteran membership. Officers include Milton, Page, Stokes, James, Jackson, Bunn, Lecoss and Dr Davis. Butler is named deputy inspector of the Virginia Department overseeing all colored posts, with a drive for higher membership and added sick and death benefits.
