General Jan Christian Smuts met with twenty white and colored Americans at Howard University to discuss the Negro and interracial issues. Organized by the Phelps-Stokes fund and President Mordecai W. Johnson, the Moorland Room lecture covered religion education health women industrial relations agriculture political status and interracial relations with experts from several institutions. Smuts praised the half day and noted his new understanding of the American race question and was impressed by the advances of the American Negro.
