Petition for Clemency for 24th Infantry at White House
A delegation from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People presented to President Coolidge in Washington a petition signed by about 1,000 names calling for executive clemency for the 24th Infantrymen imprisoned at Leavenworth for the Houston riot of August 1917. The 120,000 signers, white and Black, urge pardon citing exemplary conduct, local hostility, and unequal prosecution, and request restoration to citizenship for the remaining prisoners.

Entertains His Fellow Officers At Harris Home
On January 29 the First Baptist Church official board joined Deacon Richard L Harris at 614 1 2 North Fifth Street for a six course stag dinner. Harris, elected to the church board April 2 1900 under Dr James H Holmes, is a longtime catering employee and head of the Her mitsge Golf Club catering. The gathering began at 9 PM with friends and fellow workers in attendance.

Dr. J. CO Aus Un of Pittsburgh spoke at Fifth Street Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon, urging men to study the Bible as a lamp to guide their path. He cited Numbers 18 28 and spoke of delivering readers from bondage by attentive study, sharing his twenty six years of daily reading and warning against using scripture for argument or sin. Georgia Whites Beat Paralyzed Negro About to Sue
A severely beaten paralyzed man Williams, aged 30, was found near Dinsmore, Ga. He alleges two white men abducted him from his Brooklet home, drove to Florida, threatened to kill him, and claimed he would sue a prominent Statesboro planter over a fish dispute. Williams was transported to Brooklet for a preliminary hearing.
