Presbytery urges annual canvass and special appeals guidance

Lexington notes Presbytery urges churches to hold the annual Every Member Canvass in February or March as a season of prayer and instruction. It highlights per capita benevolences $5.55 where canvass is taken versus $3.82 where not, and calls Sessions to decide on special appeals and to leave such appeals to their judgment. Overtures reaffirm canvass as a means to build systematic giving.

The Presbytery discusses apportionment changes to route funds via Synod and Presbyteries before churches, and revises committee structure. Adjourned meetings rule rescission, thanks for a church event, and notes on licensure, ordination, installations, and mission efforts.

Conference Called For Presbyterian Meeting And College Appeal

The October 18 1916 item notes a conference to be held between January 1 and February 15 with affirmative response. Hampden Sidney College appeal by Rev W H T Squires urges support for the college to develop Presbyterian leaders. Sermon appointment for Presbyterial meeting on Bible teaching on Christ second coming. Reports from churches praise growth and new members. After two days of sermons business and hospitality Presbytery adjourned to Lexington Virginia. Education official cites productivity gains from different schooling levels.

Presbytery of Nashville Meets at Hopewell Church in Tennessee

The Presbytery of Nashville gathered September 26 1916 at Hopewell Presbyterian Church Milton Tennessee with Rev I W McGill absent as moderator. Rev W H Richardson elected moderator and clerks named. Reports praised religious life three new churches under construction and home missions steady. An evangelism conference began and stewardship plans were approved for winter. Leland Dewey Jordan joined as ministry candidate and Rev J N Rosenberg joined from Upper Missouri. An evangelist was to visit Monroe Harding Home for one month and churches absent two years were admonished. Hopewell church in Spring Creek Wilson county marked its centennial last April under Rev R Q Riley. W C Alexander S C.
