Lynching of Shipp and Smith Shocks Marion Indiana
In Marion Indiana on Friday night a mob of about 10 000 hanged Thomas Shipp 18 and Abe Smith 19 at the courthouse. The sheriff and police failed to stop the mob as they battered jail doors and pulled the two prisoners from their cells. Shipp was hanged from an elm. Smith was thrown from a third floor window. Local authorities delayed state help as calls for troops went unanswered. The event follows an alleged hold up and assault involving a white couple.
