Sylvester Medley pleads guilty and waives jury trial for life as Judge Julien Gunn weighs the case. Witnesses describe a tense scene in Henrico County Virginia with threats of the electric chair looming. Mental examination finds Medley not insane, while police recount the June shooting of his mother and a brother.
The incident centered on a July 22 to 27 dispute between Thomas Taylor and Rogers and Norman Jordan. Taylor fired after quarrels with his wife, wounded Norman Jordan, killed Jordan, and was himself shot by Norman Jordan, with Rogers Jordan and others involved as witnesses and bystanders. Funeral details and morgue notes are recorded by the coroner.
A July 31 1928 Washington note from Honorable Perry W Howard to John Mitchell Jr of the Richmond Planet commends a recent write up. Howard extends well wishes and appreciation for the publication.
Richmond Virginia clergyman Rev T F Collins has been named pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Louisa County Virginia succeeding Rev H H Gaines now serving as assistant to Dr T J King in Pittsburgh. Collins previously led Lebanon Baptist Church in Tunstall for four years and was ordained at Fourth Baptist Church in Richmond. He urges parishioners to arrange engagements and subscriptions to the Planet newspaper. Mr Mrs B R Carter Jr of New York and Mrs Eylynvis Bowler of Rev J and Mrs Bowler visited with relatives in the city.
The Shepherd's Twilight excursion on August 25 draws broad support with over four thousand tickets sold and plans for a Twilight Saturday trip to Bay Shore on the 26th as Richmond trains depart at 2:00 PM. City groups back the event with nearly unified cooperation, while Grand Shepherd Ora Brown Stokes attends a National Federation convention in Washington.
The Richmond Forum Classes announce a Negro History course for citizens. First session is Wednesday night August 22 at 8 PM in the Fifth Street Baptist Church. Registration inquiries to R. Mitchell, R. W. Moss, or Amos C. Clark.
