New trustees gain authority January 1 but lack funds while the old trustees hold funds but no authority. If cold days from January 1 to 5 require aid, they must appeal to county charities. A 1905 amendment caused the delay. no business can be conducted January 1–5 as old offices settle January 5.
Private Roy Anderson of the Tenth Regiment, Company K, at Fort Benjamin Harrison was stranded in the city seeking a return to Indianapolis by tomorrow morning to avoid arrest as a deserter. He was arrested on charges of stealing two shotguns from Jesse Abner and Reid Burke of Liberty, but police found he was not the man sought.
Mrs. Daniel McManus wife of the first sergeant of the police wonders who took her dark plush coat from the policemen's ball on Wednesday night. She returned to find another plush coat left behind that is too small for her to wear.
Fire department responded yesterday morning to Milton Stanbake at 88 Boyer Street for a roof fire similar to Sunday’s blaze at the same residence. Damage described as very small and caused by a spark from the chimney.
William Kohlen was injured unloading lumber from a C. C. and L. car near the north end depot yesterday morning. He fell and sustained stomach and buttocks injuries but is not severely hurt and was taken home to 540 South Sixth Street by ambulance.
John Miller, a colored boy, was arrested Wednesday evening and charged with stealing $9 from his brother Benjamin. He has been bound over to the circuit court. Relatives do not object to his being sent to the reformatory.
Walker Turner of 38 Fort Wayne Avenue is to be released from quarantine today after a severe case of smallpox. Scarlet fever cases number two and diphtheria one in the area. Quarantines are in force on South Thirteenth and Sixth streets and on North Seventeenth street, showing citywide spread.
Dr J Everist Cathell of this city recently entered the lecture field and delivered a successful talk in Memphis Tennessee on Orators and Oratory. His address drew favorable mentions in Memphis papers.
The Abe Ruef jury returned a guilty verdict today on bribery charges after a delayed deliberation. The decision follows a high profile San Francisco case with ongoing predictions of possible disagreement.
Prolonged Frybarger case has caused several cases to be continued indefinitely. The affected matters include Crowe versus McConaha, Bethege versus Schroeder, the railroad commission case, and Doney versus Doney.

Rushville Indiana December 16 six persons charged with whitecapping John B Tribbey were acquitted Tribbey was abducted from his home on the night of August 5 brutalized with a nailed board tarred and feathered and left near death His wife Leona Tribbey and relatives Charles and Harry McFatrich Burt Kennedy Perry Collins and Watayette Gollilan faced charges of complicity in the assault and Mrs Tribbey was named as an instigator.
Representative George L. Lilley governor elect of Connecticut is cited in a subpoena over alleged violations of the corrupt practices act. The complaint by George L. Fox accuses Lilley or his Waterbury associates of distributing campaign funds through saloonkeepers to treat electors and of concealing illegal expenditures.
An abrupt rise from the Great Kanawha to the upper Ohio pushed water levels up over three feet at Gallipolis affecting river traffic. Packets may resume to Louisville after months, but coal shipments are hindered while empties reach mines for loading, and fears of a freeze-up loom as fleets await movement.
American press dispatch from Fort Leavenworth reports Brigadier General Henry Jackson retired and dead at his home in Kansas. He died of cancer at age 71 after a long military career spanning the Crimean War Civil War Spanish American War and several Indian campaigns. Jackson was born in Callerbury England.
A man living nearby is found dead after sleeping a week. He worked all day buying corn a week ago and did not wake at his usual time. Physicians were called but could not revive him, leaving doctors puzzled by the unusual case.
In Breathitt County Kentucky five or six men attacked the home of Ed Callahan former sheriff and ally of Judge James Hargis. Callahan fired back wounding Rand Sebastian and killing a mule. Lewis Deaton Logan Deaton William Riley and Rand Sebastian were arrested for assault and conspiracy. Feud tensions rise between Callahan and the Smiths amid past Breathitt murders. John Smith confessed involvement hired by Callahan and Hargis.
President Castro of Venezuela lands at Pauillac aboard the Guadeloupe after leaving La Guayra on November 23. A Foreign Minister Pichon representative meets him, then Castro travels to hotel with his party. Paris reports France will not expel Castro for now and will seek negotiations to resolve pending issues.
Hamburg Dec 11 Count Johan von Bernstorff the new German ambassador to the United States sails today for New York aboard a liner to present his credentials and begin formal relations with Washington.
Smith, cashier of the defunct Rocky Ford State Bank, was found guilty of receiving deposits after he knew the bank insolvent. The minimum punishment is five years in the penitentiary.
Virginia Kanawha district miners and operators held a special session to discuss placing nonunion miners on a competitive basis. The convention followed a rejected proposal from operators to adopt such a system. President Tom Lewis of the United Mine Workers attended the meeting.
