The sixth annual Richmond Police Department ball at the Coliseum drew about 2,000 attendees. An eight piece orchestra supplied music, and 78 couples led the grand march. The hall was festooned with American flags and officers wore full dress uniforms with a rose and carnation.
Township Trustee Potter and successor James Howarth discuss eliminating graft by poor from aid sources. Two key issues to be debated in two weeks include the work house and related relief practices.
Warren Davenport aged nearly 83 was found dead in bed at his daughter Anna Paulson’s home on Straight Line Pike. Coroner Bramkamp investigated. death likely from heart disease. Survived by five sons and two daughters, including William H and Richard A Davenport and daughter Mrs. Anna Paulson. Funeral Friday at 10 am at Mrs. Paulson’s home with Rev. Allen Jay Bure directing at Elk Horn cemetery.
A heavy water tank fell at the Craighead plumbing shop injuring a worker Tuesday. The tank pinned him to the ground. no bones were broken but his back was badly bruised.
No word on whether Albert Turner was acquitted or convicted in the horse stealing trial. Omar Ratliff had been to receive a $50 reward if Turner was convicted but has not yet received it. Turner was captured in this city last June.
The Indiana College Athletic League will award its annual track and field meet at a Saturday morning meeting in Indianapolis. Earlham is the leading candidate with Washington, Rose Poly, Indiana, Franklin and Hanover in the running. Butler and DePauw may apply for berths and are likely to be admitted if they join.
A US census bureau compilation covers 1887 to 1906, showing 12,832,044 marriages and 945,625 divorces. Divorce growth far outpaced population, rising from 10,000 to about 66,000 annual divorces, with the rate per 100,000 married people climbing from 29 to 200 by 1900.
Divorce rates are higher in the United States than in foreign countries with available statistics. Desertion is the most common ground, accounting for 38.9 percent of divorces from 1887 to 1906. Nearly half of cases involve husbands, about one third involve wives. Drunkenness is cited in 5.3 percent of wife-initiated suits and 1.1 percent of husband-initiated suits. Most divorced individuals married in the same state, with 88.5 percent doing so.
A special venire of thirty five men was drawn yesterday to select a jury in the state vs Sherman Kellar charged with premeditated murder of William Thornton. Each chosen man is to report Monday morning to deputy sheriff Oar Mashmeyer.
County commissioners will meet Saturday morning to consider read claims in a session shorter than usual with fewer entries on the agenda.
After a week of evidence the defense in the Martin Chitwood case contesting the George Fryberger will finished testimony yesterday afternoon. Today the arguments proceed with four hours allotted to each side before the jury. Defense likely by Conner and Henry U. Johnson. plaintiff represented by Judge Forkner and Thomas J. Study.
Two robbers entered the Homer Moore & Sons poultry office in Danville on December 9, holding bookkeeper Harry Stine at gunpoint. They escaped with $52 in cash and $450 in checks while fifteen workers were in the basement.
In Chicago on December 9 Judge DePuy refused to grant a perpetual restraining order sought by A Montgomery Ward to stop the $8,000,000 Marshall Field museum from rising on the land reclaimed portion of Grant Park commonly called Take Front park. The court held the prior permanent injunction covered only the park proper west of the Illinois Central tracks and not the reclaimed land.
The body of Rear Admiral Joseph B. Coghlan, who died Saturday in New Rochelle New York, was buried at Arlington National Cemetery after full military ceremonies. The arrival train was met by a service at St John’s Episcopal church led by Rev George Smith. Marines from the Washington barracks and a Marine band formed the escort and the admiral’s flag flew at half mast on the caisson en route to the cemetery.
The president sent nominations to the Senate for chief of ordnance with rear admiral rank and for vice governor of the Philippine Islands. The names listed include Newton B. Mason and Forbes Cameron, among others, as announced in American Press Dispatch from Washington.
In Kansas City a gun battle between police and a religious fanatic band led by James Sharp, known as Bilalist, leaves Patrolman Albert Dalbour and Lulu Pratt dead. Louis Pratt, self-styled SAdamid, is wounded and vows to die claiming further killings. The wanderer group, spreading faith across states, fled after the clash while Mrs Sharp is jailed and Mrs Pratt recalls their road to reverend life.
Henry Helmich, a drayman, was injured returning home at noon when snow balls were thrown. Police investigated the incident and took statements from witnesses.
President Castro of Venezuela remains in good health aboard the French steamer Guadeloupe which docked at Santander. He plans to move to Bordeaux and travel overland to Berlin for medical input and to settle Venezuela's international disputes. Doctors accompany him as Dutch naval patrols monitor related movements.
Ciem Carr of Shurley Carr stock buyers has purchased the old saw mill location to establish yards for grading and holding stock for shipment. The yards will be the only ones in the city alongside two railroad companies. Completion is delayed until spring due to bad weather. The firm is noted as possibly the largest stock purchaser in the area and has faced shipping delays from fluctuating markets. John Craig owns the old saw mill site.
John L Sullivan, once boxing champion, sues for divorce from his wife who is said to live in Centerville Rhode Island. The complaint cites infidelity.
Rome Dec 9 Lloyd C Griscom the American ambassador has offered the hospitality of the embassy to Sir Edward Edgerton the retiring British ambassador He is ill but must leave the embassy at week’s end for his successor If unable to travel he will stay with Griscom until his health is restored
A bomb exploded in the air shaft of a tenement at 330 East Sixty third Street injuring more than a score and causing panic. Five people were seriously hurt as the blast wrecked the building occupied by Italian residents. The blast shook blocks and many occupants were asleep when it went off.
John Gale a 49 year old Luxemburg immigrant released from Joliet after 27 years behind prison walls steps into civilian life. Mathew J. Huss helped secure his pardon and greets him at the gate as Gale discovers outside freedoms from cars to streets and crowds for the first time since a 1910 laborer killing in Evanston.
The text describes a former prisoner aided by Mr Huss who leads him off the sidewalk. Pardon recipients believe he will soon adapt to freedom and seek work. He plans to live with his sister after release.
The Glen colony expanded yesterday with four coyotes and seven prairie dogs joining the bears. Superintendent Klopp and Watson P. O'Neal retrieved the animals from Liberty for the local Zoo, secured by a Liberty firm.
A fire destroyed the Indiana Box company's Muskegon factory. Loss estimated around 5.0 thousand dollars, fully insured.

In a recent bowling event at the City alley the 5 B’s defeated the 5 D’s two games to one. Team members for the 5 B’s include John Bartel W Bartel Jake Ray Beck with the 5 D’s led by Knauber Zeven Davis and Davis who was substituted by Hi in the final game. Scores from last night are incomplete.
