The Kentucky Audience Cheers Tell in a Theater Scene
In 1838 a strolling company performed William Tell in a Kentucky town. The crowd, many new to theater, erupted during the apple shoot scene as a tall local challenged Gesler, shouting to substitute a pint cup on his head and defending Tell’s liberty. The moment sparked a broader uproar before calm returned.
