Kindness and a child’s plea haunt the heart

The Richmond Mail recounts a poem on kindness and a tale from Fanny Fern about “old maids.” It follows Little Charlie in a crowded boarding house, his innocent queries and prayers, and a nurse-like narrator who sacrifices for the feverish child. The piece contrasts neglectful parents with quiet devotion, ending with Charlie’s death and the question Where's Lizzie. It also notes German gift schemes at Nassau customs, a mother’s plea to a nine year old, and the boy Robert requesting a box of cigars, revealing social mores of the era.
