James N. Kehoe former Ninth District congressman and Mason county farmer will lecture at the Richmond courthouse at 2 o clock Monday afternoon about the tobacco marketing plan. Kentucky tobacco farmers and southern growers show strong interest as September court day draws a large crowd.
The forecast calls for continued warm conditions with likely fair weather tonight and Friday across Kentucky. No rain is expected and temperatures remain comfortable as a high pressure system stays in place.
Alvin M. Owsley, national director of the Americanism Commission of the American Legion, urged Kentuckians at the state convention to defend free speech with laws, oppose internal threats, and unite to uplift national faith, justice, and literacy. He warned against abusing free speech and called for loyalty as essential to American citizenship.
Rev. John L. Weber of Paducah told the American Legion convention in Lexington that citizens must show single hearted devotion to the United States. He warned against rival loyalties, urged loyalty to old glory, and urged support for veterans as a constructive task in peace.
A fire at First Presbyterian Church during a reception started when pennies placed behind five fuses on the Sunday School switchboard sparked the blaze. Electricians contained the fire quickly, noting the practice risks insulation damage and possible greater harm if left unattended. A large crowd gathered as word spread of the fire.
Hogs 50 cents lower in Cincinnati with Chicago up 10 cents. Cattle slow and Jersey steady. Louisville reports cattle 300 steady, hogs 40 cents lower at top $9, sheep 700 steady with $2.50 declines, lambs at $7.50.
The Courier Journal reports potential federal relief for Kentucky Burley tobacco growers. War Finance Corporation official Eugene Myers Jr. proposed a conference with the WFC board on or after September 8 to finalize relief plans. The Cooperative Marketing Association of Burley Tobacco Growers of Kentucky will convene in Lexington Friday to choose a delegation for the meeting.
Washington reports the Department of Agriculture says the August condition drop reduced the estimated final cotton production by about 1 million bales. The forecast now indicates roughly 7,000,000 bales, versus 13,506,000 last year.

A Winchester business man claims ownership of an Overland touring car recovered from the Kentucky river under 20 feet of water near Boonesboro. He had collected $1000 theft insurance on the vehicle. He says the engine failed while driving toward Ford and he sent a repairman, who returned without the car. He believes it was stolen.
Wentuckians on the first dove hunting day report about 635 men and boys have obtained licenses at the county clerk’s office by 10 am Thursday. A steady stream seeks licenses with many named hunters listed among early licensees.
The farm of Frank Brown on Lexington pike offered for sale by assignee Col. G. B. Swinebroad was withdrawn after a $100 per acre bid, well below last year’s $167 per acre price.
A. T. Hart of the Federal Land Bank at Louisville conducts farm land appraisals in Madison county this week. Secretary L. W. Jack Shearer an 82 year old resident of Red House was fatally struck by Louisville and Nashville train No 32 as he crossed Shade Bridge near his home Wednesday afternoon. His mangled body could not escape and was buried in Richmond Thursday.
Dr. Nothcutt of Lexington was fined 15 dollars and costs in Judge Price’s court on Wednesday for hunting without a license. Game Warden W H Grider vows to pursue violators and ensure punishment, keeping vigilant on the job.

The Louisville Times reports a high speed chase near the KR and J Bridge as police block a northbound stolen Nash car bearing Kentucky license 117805. A boy driver, hatless and about five six, leaped free after a crash, leaving his coat with an officer. License issued to R. Burnam Jr. of Richmond Madison County.
A large delegation from Jesse M. Dykes Post American Legion will travel to Lexington Friday for the state convention. Official delegates are Dr. O. F. Hume and Charles R. George with Joe Barnett and Tom McCown as alternates, leading the Legion Band.

Misses Natalie Woodruff of Lexington and Florence Miller of Michigan travel to Manchester Clay county on khaki riding habits. They pass through Richmond spending Saturday night and stay at the foot of Big Hill with M. J. Carrier and family before continuing toward Manchester and planned return to Lexington.

In Knox circuit court, the Commonwealth versus Bart Reid for the killing of James Lee opened with both sides ready. A prior examining trial drew state troops for order. troops may not be needed unless issues worsen. Reid, a World War II era veteran, shot Lee on a main street after alleged threats. Lee had testified in a prior shooting case. Reid remains free on 5000 bond, living in Manchester with counsel, while prosecution fields additional lawyers. James Lee was linked to John Bailey, who earlier was convicted in Mt. Vernon for killing Beverley White.
