Chicago reports the Railroad Labor Board failed to avert a planned walkout by five unions set to begin October 30. Ben W. Hooper said talks were pleasant and beneficial but produced no definite results. Union presidents then met in secret and announced the strike would proceed.
Washington officials expressed optimism about a possible nationwide railroad shutdown. After a Chicago conference between the railroad, labor board, and union chiefs, a cooling off period appeared to ease disruption fears. Preparations for Commerce Department coordinated transport of essentials were underway in case the strike proceeded. A White House session with President Harding, ICC Chairman McChord, and acting Attorney General Gott left the impression that a freight rate reduction order could be issued.

The T. G. Perkins farm of 15034 acres sold Friday to W. D. Sanders of Whitlock at 175 per acre. Brutus Moberly bought 5314 acres at 151, another Perkins tract sold at 84, and Whitlock tract to T. M. Perkins at 65. Buyers showed spirited bidding and praised the prices amid quality land.
Women in West Potit Hardin County will field a ticket for town trustees in the general election. A men's ticket has already been named.
In Frankfort on October 21 a telegram reports three men arrested over a series of suspicious fires in Allen County. Joseph J. Spencer and an elderly man named Poynter bound over to the Allen circuit court. W. J. Butcher to testify. Poynter charged with procuring arson. Spencer with burning an automobile. Butcher implicated in aiding.
Widow Mrs foutisa Cody, widow of Colonel William F. Cody known as Buffalo Bill, died at her Cody home last night of heart disease at age 78.
Admiral Earl Beatty of the British navy arrives in New York aboard the liner Aquitania escorted by destroyers. He will guest the American Legion and address the Kansas City Convention, serving mainly as adviser to the British delegation at the disarmament conference.
Cincinnati dispatch reports Richard Phillips, 21, a cooperative student at the University of Cincinnati and native of Fort Thomas Kentucky, drowned while working on a government construction project at Brent Kentucky. He reportedly fell between two barges while attempting a jump. his body was recovered.
Detroit press dispatch notes a ten day conference in Detroit November 14 to 22 bringing Methodist Episcopal leaders from around the world. Fifteen million dollars will be apportioned among church divisions for the coming year. About 25 bishops and many division superintendents will attend with meetings focusing on race relations health education and disarmament era topics.
