Farm Bureau Cuts Freight Rates Saving Farmers Millions
The Farm Bureau led a drive to lower railroad freight rates, saving about a third of a billion dollars annually for farmers. Actions include rail valuing cuts, grain and livestock rate wins, intrastate reductions, and a 10 percent cut on agricultural commodities. Egg shipments and perishables prompt improved packing and refrigeration efforts. The Transportation Department coordinates national and state efforts and the American Farm Bureau Federation was formed in 1920 led by Clifford Thorne and C. B. Hutchings.
