The Winnes case jury resumes deliberations in Harlan at 9 am with one holdout for conviction. Midday reports say jurors told the deputy sheriff they were hopelessly deadlocked before the court urged them to continue.
President elect urges legislation for voluntary training of 150000 men annually. House military committee chairman Warn announces the move to block army cuts below 175000. Kalmi argues against reducing the force now, citing lack of allies and unsettled conditions facing the United States.
Washington Feb 2 The Attorney General Palmer ruled that government permits to withdraw liquor from bonded warehouses are limited to manufacturers and wholesale druggists, and that wholesale liquor dealers are not entitled to permits. Commissioner Williams said the opinion does not interfere with current stock dispositions.
Jack Dempsey announced a telegram from his New York manager that the 15 round bout with Jess Willard, former champion, scheduled for March 17 in New York, is indefinitely postponed due to boxing commission limits on admission price. No further details given.
Washington reports the senate elections committee finished a recount of the 1918 Michigan senate race. J. H. Gourley of Morgantown West Virginia told Kentucky Horticultural Society members that soil treatment largely determines tree vigor and productivity despite spraying being a key operation. He spoke on orchard management including spraying fertilizing and pruning and stressed the value of standard grade wet packed fruit.
Toledo transit riders will pay six cents per ride starting today and reduce transfers. After more than a year at seven cents per ride and three rides for twenty cents with two extra cents for transfers, the new grant cuts the transfer charge to one cent.
In Harlan Kentucky on February 2, about 200 coal mine accidents occurred in January across Bell and Harlan counties. Two fatalities were reported. C. T. Dodson of a casualty company provided the figures, noting limited full time operation and 7 mines in Harlan and 76 in Bell.
Frankfort Ky Feb 2 Thus Noe of Harlan county was pardoned by the Governor after serving time for a murder he allegedly committed to protect his wife. He had been sentenced last May to five years.

Murray Kentucky February 2 Sparks from brush while Jim Mayfield burned a plant bed for a new tobacco crop set fire to his tobacco barn destroying the barn and last year crop stored inside.
Mayfield Kentucky February 2 The largest hog ever killed in Graves County was butchered by John Turnbow of Farmington. The animal weighed 980 pounds and measured six and a half feet in circumference and eight feet in length.

Miss Kathryn Smith of Richmond starred in the musical comedy Katcha-Koo, presented January 26 and 27 in Maysville under the American Legion auspices. Her lead upheld her reputation for quality work, and the Legion earned credit for casting.
Col. Bob Walker reports from Thomas Delay of Frankfort Ohio that a carload of well broke horses and mules will ship to Richmond this week. The stock can be viewed and every horse or mule sold will be as represented. Delay is known in the Blue Grass region for selling stock in many towns.
Hustonville man Murrell Reid arrived in Richmond to assume duties in the clerical department at Stockton's Drug Store. He comes highly recommended and is expected to be a valuable addition to the store staff.
Louisville, February 2 Distillers protest a plan to concentrate 2,000,000 gallons of whisky in bonded warehouses in Kentucky. They claim a loss of three gallons per 600,000 barrels, while Collector Hamilton estimates about two quarts per barrel. Dry staves in stacked barrels draw in contents when moved.
The Princeton Redder editor George Catlett was moved from Princeton New York to Hopkinsville hospital in critical condition due to blood poisoning starting from a toe abrasion a week earlier.
Allen D. Campbell 23 Yale graduate employed locally left Louisville for New York to visit his mother. Dispatch says his body was found beside railroad tracks near Harrisburg Pennsylvania with suspicion he fell from a train.
Louisville report says effective Wednesday the L and N railroad will lay off 2,509 men in the mechanical department due to decreased business. Other departments are instructed to follow with similar curtailments as possible.
A former Madison county man, J. M. Mote Morris, was urged to surrender by Montgomery County officials for alleged involvement in the killing of Ben Gay. The Dayton paper reported the grand jury ignored the case, with Morris claiming self defense and stating he had stayed in Cincinnati to recover from injuries he says Gay inflicted.

General John J. Pershing told the House Naval Committee that pacifism and un preparedness must be avoided while supporting world disarmament. He urged maintaining the current army and navy programs until a multilateral agreement is reached by at least five major powers. He said another war between Britain and the United States is unlikely but cautioned that other nations may doubt American nonaggression.
Rich mond merchant J. S. Stanifer announces in today’s paper a sweeping clothing sale with pre war prices across all departments. He states prices are dropped in every line and will run through the sale starting Thursday February 3.
