Cincinnati claims the city as gateway to the South and to Kentucky whisky stores. Stephen McGrath, U S Internal Revenue Collector, says a Cincinnati man heads a powerful bootlegging ring with profits cited as two billion dollars in the last year.
J Sherman Porter Lexington chief Federal Prohibition Inspector says the supreme ruler of the United States bootlegger ring directs liquor transactions from Cincinnati. He claims robberies of stills and trucks are faked, guards bribed, and officers reassigned to reduce threats. He praises Elwood Hamilton and criticizes recent permit refusals influencing eastern whisky shipments.
President Harding spoke at Plymouth during the tercentenary landing ceremony expressing hope that the disarmament conference could usher in a new era of peace and freedom. Louisville August 1 Associated Press Dr W A Ganfield president of Centre College refused to discuss reports he would resign at a meeting of the executive committee this afternoon at the Louisville Trust Company directors room. It was said the committee would ask him to stay until next year and he might seek resignation effective October 1. Ganfield has been offered Carroll College Wisconsin presidency where he taught history and political science for 11 years before leading Centre.
Sid Hatfield former Matewan police chief and prominent figure in Mingo county industrial strife was shot and killed in a street fight in Welch McDowell county today according to Bluefield dispatches.
Sid Hatfield former Matewan police chief and Ed Chambers Matewan policeman were killed in a courthouse yard gunfight in Welch West Virginia just before noon. Private detective T C Lively and four others were arrested in connection with the shooting. Hatfield had been jailed after a prior Mo Hawk town shooting and was released on bail with Chambers to appear in court today. The quarrel with Jively and friends led to the deadly exchange.
A landmark Richmond store owner A Dobrowsky sells his First street shop to H Routenberg of McKinney Lincoln county. The new owner, tied to Danville merchants Pushin Brothers, plans to remodel and announce placement in the Daily Register. Dobrowsky, Russian born naturalized citizen, may relocate to Cincinnati with wife and daughters.
Mr. EL S Riddleberger received word ten mornings ago that his mother had died Sunday night at her son's Charleston West Virginia home where she had visited. He had just been called to her bedside but she seemed better and he returned home. He also lost his father a year ago at their Edinburgh Virginia residence.

J L Knight a Fayette county farmer and Lexington warehouse man returned from South Carolina markets to help organize a cooperative marketing association for Burley tobacco. He reports opening prices at Bamberg Mullins and Florence far below last year with many sales not covering warehouse costs and farmers moving tobacco back to farms as curing wood may be worth more than sale price.
