Richmond Rats Begin 1957 Ratting Program at University
Sophomore President Joe Barker led the 1957 ratting events at the University, with freshmen receiving beanies and rat manuals, a candlelight vigilante ceremony, and a series of pranks spanning Thursday to Saturday including tug of wars, serenades, a mass morning march, and a final hat removing ceremony at halftime of the Richmond Randolph-Macon game.

Chi Sigma Wins First Pinchbeck Scholarship Award
Chi Sigma, the school’s only Interfraternity Council member, wins the Pinchbeck Award for Scholarship Improvement. The frat raised its average from .810 in 1955-56 to 1,100 in 1956-57, surpassing the All-Men’s and All-Fraternity averages. The plaque honors the best improvement and becomes the winner’s permanent property.

University of Richmond groups announce a Sunday September 29 program to introduce activities to freshmen. The BSAU Wesley Club Westminster Fellowship Canterbury Club Newman Club and Lutheran Student Association plan tours of nine Richmond churches with a grand finale supper at Grove Avenue. Reveille Centenary First St. Giles Tuckahoe Westminister sponsors Wesley and Presbyterian tours run from North Court starting at 2 30 and 4 00. Canterbury Club meets 5 45 riders to St Stephen's Parish House supper 6 00 then Rev Taylor Scott speaks Berlin Today. Newman and Hillel set events later October 12.

National Maid of Cotton Contest Begins for 1958
The National Cotton Council announces the search for the 1958 Maid of Cotton with 19th century details. Seventeen of the 19 maids have been coeds or recent graduates. The winner will travel 50 000 miles in a 30 000 mile coast to coast tour visiting 40 cities in the United States Canada and Europe. The maid will train in New York for a month and model in an all cotton wardrobe including 40 garments from leading American designers. A new car awaits the winner, provided by Memphis Ford dealers. Entry eligibility includes birth in a cotton state age 19 to 25 height at least 5 feet 5 inches and never married.
