First Classes Kick off University of Richmond Orientation Week
Freshmen at Richmond and Westhampton College start classes as 340 Richmond College and 191 Westhampton freshmen attend orientation activities. Events include YWCA kickoff, RGWO picnic, Open House on Fraternity Row, and a few adviser meetings as deans and counselors guide the new cohort. The Westhampton Law School reports 170 students, ten fewer than last year, with niney first year men.

Richmond College Names Gray and Baker to New Administrative Posts
Dr. G J Gray is elevated to dean of administrative services working with President Modlin and Provost Smart. William Baker becomes dean of students, supervising social activities, dormitories, and discipline, while Ellena Walker shifts to placement director. Dean Grigg now leads faculty counselor program. Gray holds a Richmond College and Virginia PhD, with past naval and academic roles. Baker, a Richmond College alumnus, earned his divinity degrees and masters, and serves as U S Naval Reserve chaplain with prior dormitory focus.

A possible faculty exchange with Virginia Union University aims to broaden integration at the University of Richmond this September. The plan includes student teachers from the university in Richmond area Negro schools, with Barry Greene as Richmond College’s first Negro dormitory student adjusting to campus life.
