Robins Gift Brings Virginia Private University New Endowment

Robins Pharmaceutical Company founder's $50 million gift to the University of Virginia increases its endowment from about $10 million to the $60 million range. Forty million is in Robins stock. ten million is a challenged gift to be matched over ten years. The board plans reinvestment and diversification while maintaining Baptist ties and seeking further philanthropy.

Death of controversial bishop shocks university symposium

Dr. James A. Pike, former Episcopal bishop known for contacting his dead son through a Philadelphia medium, was to speak on Spiritualism and Mysticism at the university in spring 1970. He died mysteriously near the Dead Sea, leaving the planned lecture in question and prompting discussion of whether his widow Diane Pike might take his place.

Godwin Opens Convocation Series with Governor Speaker

Virginia Governor Mills B. Godwin will launch the university convocation series with an 11 30 am address to faculty, seniors and freshmen in the Greek Theater. Four convocations are scheduled this year including a sophomores scholarship, a seniors honors ceremony in March, and a May leadership convocation for juniors.

Trustees Shelve Code Await Relations Report

The University board of trustees committee on the student Code of Conduct recommended shelving most code proposals pending the Faculty-Student Committee on Campus Relations report. The Campus Relations report is now due this fall, with February set for the next board meeting. SGA President Lance Wood criticized the delay and noted the drinking rule would remain unenforced for now.

UIC Freshman Retreat at Camp Thunderbird Sunday

The University Interfaith Council sponsors a freshman retreat titled A Full Afternoon Sunday at 2 30 pm at Camp Thunderbird in Chesterfield County. Activities include boating singing softball football and a picnic supper plus worship workshops led by Rev. Walter C Huffman. Rides depart North Court Barrier at 2 30 pm, cost 50 cents per person.
