Education Society Initiates Distinctive Achievement Members

Eleven students were inducted into Kappa Delta Pi on Monday night May 7 in a Richmond chapter ceremony. Initiates include Jane Andersen Carolyn Baker Jim Bardin Anne Byrd Al Echols Lidletta Rice Louis Seldes Don Tillotson Ruth Tipton Billy Tuck and Irene Beauchamp. Pat McElroy outlined ideals with Dean Overton and five student assistants.

Alumni Recognize Top RC BS Seniors

Alumni recognized top seniors from Richmond College and the School of Business at Alumni Day in MillisHer gym. L Wilbur Kersey, former student government president, received the Alumni Council award, and Edmund G Harrison received the Norman medal for business focus and basketball. Kersey plans to enter Southeastern Theological Seminary while Harrison, a marketing major, aims for a career in business. Bernard Grafton Regland won the Alpha Kappa Psi scholarship for outstanding business scholarship.

Donor Creates 20000 Dollar Chinese Scholarship at University

Dr. David J. Carver class of 1905 donates 20000 dollars to establish a scholarship fund at the University. Income to assist qualified students with preference to Chinese students. Carver formerly taught in Nanking 1907 to 191? and later traveled in China. He also donated 140 Chinese ceramics now on display at Westhampton Keller Hall.

Senior Night at Westhampton Class of 56 Skit and Dorm News

Westhampton seniors plan Senior Night in Keller Hall at 8 PM with a skit Alice in Westhamptonland and a Last Will and Testament by 56ers. The parade precedes events. Wood Memorial Dormitory should be ready by mid September and Ryland Hall spaces convert to offices and classrooms.

Freshmen Plant Tree as Class Gift at Westhampton

Westhampton will hold its annual freshman tree planting on Tuesday May 15. Ruth Adkins president of the freshman class will speak and present a six foot Norway spruce to the college from the class of 1959. Dr. Modlin Dean Roberts and Dean Tucker will place the first earth, Anita Knipling chaired the fundraising, and Hannah Coker aided in tree selection near North Court. The ceremony is a longtime campus tradition inviting all to attend.

Westhampton Athletic Group to Host Annual Banquet

About one hundred Westhampton students and officials will attend the Athletic Association banquet in Court Dining Hall Wednesday night May 16 at 7 pm. Cups for top intramural teams will be awarded along with individual letters and awards. Helen Crittenden will announce the general athletic championship. Rose Dranchak leads banquet arrangements.

Business Students Tour Newport News Yard

A group from the School of Business Administration toured Newport News Shipyard on April 19 under Alpha Kappa Psi and the Society for the Advancement of Management. They viewed a shipyard film on the SS United States and heard discussions by Sam Hickey and L B Peterson before a yard tour at the largest private shipyard.

Art Radin Elected IFC Council President May 7

Inter-fraternity Council elections held May 7 named Art Radin president and Marvin Alterman as vice president. Sam Fischer won the House representative seat, with Dr Caylor retiring as secretary treasurer after 28 years and receiving a wood mounted barometer memento. Dr Worsham succeeds as secretary treasurer.

The Howards of Virginia at Student Center Lounge

The Howards of Virginia, a full length historical romance, will be shown in the Student Center lounge at 7 30 p m on Friday. Cary Grant stars in the film about plantation life in Virginia. Refreshments will be served after the showing.

Odell Wins PDE Short Story Contest With $10 Prize

John B. Odell earned first place and a $10 prize for What Have I Got to Lose in the Pi Delta Epsilon short story contest. Rosalind Allen took second for Uncle John's and $5. PDE sponsored the campus competition to spur creative writing among students.

U R Veterans Club Elects Officers With Scott New President

The University of Richmond Veterans' Club held its annual election. Darwin H. Scott was named president, replacing retiring head Charles W. Rezzi as the club outlined next year's plans including veterans' legislation in Washington, Orientation Week activities, and campus service.

WRVA Quiz Finals Award $1000 Scholarship Prize

The Richmond-WRVA Radio Scholarship Quiz crowns a $1000 prize for the final round, broadcast Sunday at 2 PM. Three quarter and semi final veterans, each with a $600 Richmond College scholarship, lead the 1956 finalists among 500 Eastern Virginia high seniors.

Golden Heart Ball Celebrated by Richmond Sigma Phi Epsilon

The Richmond alumni of Sigma Phi Epsilon plan the Golden Heart ball at the Officers Club of Virginia Friday at 9 p.m. A banquet at 6:30 p.m. will honor chapter mothers and present awards for scholarship and athletic participation.
