DeVoe Wins Speaker Election In House Meeting

Jimmy DeVoe was elected speaker of the House over Joe Jones in a regular meeting at the Student Center conference room. Wilson Higgs won the clerk post and David McCants beat Allan Flannock for secretary as the chamber also advanced a pay raise for graders and lab assistants to one dollar per hour. A high fidelity record player purchase bill, supervised by Mr. Stone, passed to be reviewed by the senate and president Ellis West, aiming to provide phonographs for dorms and student use.

Broughton Named President Of Literary Society

Shelby M. Broughton was elected president of the 8 C Michell Literary Society for 1957 1958 by acclamation at the regular meeting. Other officers include John Donaldson vice president Kenneth Burke forensic council representative Jack Surface secretary Bill Slaughter treasurer John Pohl House of Representatives and Dan Mix sergeant at arms.

May Day Festivities Dazzle Westhampton Campus

About 1 000 visitors crowded Westhampton for May Day on Saturday May 4 with carnival booths in a rustic stockade and a Virginia Fantasia totem. The Band sponsored water bucket throw drew crowds while Pocahontas was reenacted and Studio Art showed modern paintings. Grace Bloxsom crowned queen at 4 00 pm. lantern parade. Hiawatha by Orchesis. Governor's Ball with 450 guests. Monday returned to normal as the weekend faded.

Golden Heart Ball To Be Held Friday

The Richmond Alumni Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon hosts its Golden Heart Ball on Friday May 17 at 9 00 pm. The formal event takes place at the Officers Club of Virginia with attendees expected to dress in evening wear.

Phillips Elected Chairman of Richmond College Honor Council

William Phillips, junior class member and Pi Kappa Alpha, was chosen chairman for 1957 58. He has served on the Honor Council two years and led as semester president. Also active in Cottertan staff Scabbard and Blade Debate Team and intramural athletics. Doug Millar from Warwick elected secretary. he is a freshman in Sigma Phi Epsilon and participates in the Glee Club and Band.
