Yale Dean Charles Brown Addresses Richmond Westhampton Convocation

Dr Charles R Brown Dean of Yale Divinity School spoke at the convocation of Richmond and Westhampton Colleges in the University Chapel yesterday noon. He is a widely known dean and author of books including Living Again The Strange Ways of God and The Art of Preaching. Almost the entire student body attended the event as the first convocation of the year.

Students Present May Day Pageant at Westhampton

Westhampton students staged a May Day pageant at Dogwood Dell transforming the scene into Camelot. Merlin's vision linked generations of May Day observances as Queen Guenever and a knightly court arrived amid vibrant costumes. An opening shower cleared for the final song before rain returned.

Hackley Publishes The Little Fork Rangers 1861 65

Richmond College language department member Woodford B Hackley has written a book titled The Little Fork Rangers 1861 1865 a sketch of Company D Fourth Virginia Cavalry. He is the grandson of a member and has studied the war as a hobby.

True Scholar Address Opens State Oratorical Contest at Randolph-Macon

Norman of WS and 10 other college entrants compete at Randolph Macon College tonight for state honors in the annual Oratorical Contest. He earned his spot after a Chapel prelim last Friday where J B Kincanon placed second with Challenge of Human Need as his speech. The event concludes the campus forensic season.

Westhampton Student Government installs new officers

At a Friday meeting at 3 o clock the Westhampton Student Government installed the upcoming year's officers. Outgoing president Jean Wright presided and thanked students for their support as Cecilia Hunt became president and the council members swapped roles.

Prince Arranges Exhibition of Medici Prints for Colleges

Dean W. L. Prince coordinates showing of Medici prints loaned by the University of Virginia Extension Division. Richmond College and Westhampton College students view lithographic reproductions covering seven centuries of major masterpieces. The four schools represented include Italian Flemish French and English with works by Raphael Titian Da Vinci Rembrandt Rubens Vermeer and more.

Margaret Chapin Named President of Y W C A at Westhampton

Margaret Chapin of Washington D C was elected president of the Westhampton College YWCA after Louise Massey resigned. Chapin has led student activities and the Young Women's Auxiliary, succeeding Massey who stepped down to focus on Senior Class duties after three years as YWCA leader.

Fraternities Score Higher in 1926-27 Scholarship Rates

On April 29 Dean W. L. Prince reported statistics during chapel showing college wide pass rates first term 78.9 percent second term 81.66 percent while fraternities achieved 80.38 percent first term and 82.42 percent second term and non fraternities 76.23 percent first term and 81.05 percent second term. The fraternity rates exceed the college average in both terms.

Candidates to Submit Names for Class Offices

All candidates for class offices must hand their names to Lee Gaskins secretary of Student Government no later than Saturday May 1 for publication in the Richmond Collegian. Elections will be conducted under the Student Government Association ruling and will be held in the near future. This provides time for class members to consider the candidates.

Quiet Hour Rules Adopted by Student Government

The Student Government Association approved a quiet hour policy at its Monday May 2 meeting. The resolution prohibits unnecessary noises in dormitories from eight to ten P M Monday through Friday to improve dorm life. It was presented after a brief discussion and aims to reduce disturbances.

Francis Taylor Wins Best Debaters Medal in Society Contest

Francis N Taylor won the best debaters medal in the Philologian Literary Society, completing his collection with medals in three other fields. The debate on Foreign Powers Justified Chinese Policy featured seven contestants, with Taylor leading the field against the negative side.

Westhampton Alumna Taught at Hollins for 1927 28

Susie Blair former Westhampton College student body president for 1924-25 was appointed to Hollins College faculty for 1927-28 to teach English and dramatic arts. She will also lead in a production of He Who Gets Slapped and join the Presbyterian Summer School Conference staff directing religious pageants. Blair earned her MA at the University of Virginia this summer and starred as Juliet in Westhampton’s 1925 commencement play.

Law Students Achieve 100 Percent Campaign Subscriptions

T C Williams School of Law reported full participation in the university centennial drive with law students contributing 1195 dollars. The law school campaign was led by Pope Taylor and J T Nizell with captains H A Cooper W C Miller and H L Smithers guiding morning divisions.

May 17 Elections For Team Managers At Richmond

Student Government announces regular Spring elections to choose managers and assistant managers for Track Baseball and Tennis on May 17. Candidates must file with the secretary by May 12 and be published a week before voting. Class officer elections run around May 14 with names due by May 7 for next year’s seniors juniors and sophomores.
