Westhampton to Hold May Day Festivities Saturday
Westhampton prepared for a May Day celebration this Saturday featuring three top scholars in a $7 000 radio scholarship quiz final round at the University of Richmond WRVA venue. Anne Wilson James Monroe Hugh H Ronalds New Kent and John Odell Newport News high contend after twelve weeks of regional exams and eliminations. Odell Wilson and Ronalds survived quarter finals semi finals and district contests to reach the final for a freshman year funded by a $1 000 scholarship. Odell set scoring records with 175 points in the semi finals while Wilson led in earlier rounds. Odell, a track star, leads in extracurriculars while Wilson and Ronalds hold student leadership roles.

Shakespeare Play To Be Produced At University Council
The University Council plans a Shakespearean production for next fall directed by Profesor Alton Williams. At the April 7 meeting Westhampton and Richmond College students discussed continuing the campus Shakespearean tradition. The cast will adapt The Taming of the Shrew for a college audience with tryouts held this week and final readings today in the quonset hut. Rehearsals begin immediately for the Greek Theater performance next fall.

ROTC Retreat Parade Honors Cadets at UR
The Army ROTC Transportation Corps held its retreat parade on April 23 with Colonel Edward B. Hempstead inspecting the unit. University officials George M. Modlin Dr C H Wheeler and Dean Miller observed the parade and praised cadet classroom effort. Cadet Lt Colonel Bobby Holden and Cadet 1st Lt Corky Johns will receive awards on May 7 for top senior and junior cadets respectively. Nineteen corps cadets will attend six weeks of summer camp at Fort Eustis, Virginia, joining 1698 cadets from 48 colleges nationwide.

University Band to Stage May 9 Spring Concert
The 48 piece University of Richmond band under Mark Troxell performs in the Greek Theater at eight. The program mixes Rimsky Korsakov and Rossini with Rodgers and Don Conrad in a semi classical first half and a modern second half. Soloists include Al Crigler and Tom Armstrong with a clarinet quartet and leadership by Bob Parsons and Sonny Bond. Proceeds fund new band uniforms for next year.

Westhampton Festival Crown: Jane Lanier Leads Court
Miss Jane Lanier, a Westhampton College junior from Hopewell, reigned as the festival princess at the Apple Blossom events in Winchester. The parade featured thirty six princesses from four states, all in white lace over aqua taffeta with rhinestone tiaras, followed by a Queen's Ball with Tex Bencke and Shep Fields Orchestra.

Oz Themed May Queen's Ball at Keller Hall
West hampton sophomores host the May Queen's Ball with Oz theme in Keller Hall gym from 9:30 pm to midnight. Guests enter the Land of Oz and pass the Emerald Castle into the dance floor. decorations include pink green and white streamers and poppy baskets. Queen Sue Bentley will be crowned at 3:30 pm in the Green Theater and the events include a carnival on the green, booth activities, a grab-bag auction, a lantern parade and a Dorothy ballet adaptation with witches and munchkins forthcoming.

Ten Faculty Members Visit Speak At Eastern Shore Churches
Ten University of Richmond faculty members visited Baptist churches in the Eastern Shore region on April 25 and spoke on Christian education and the university’s facilities the next morning. Led by W. Bush Loving, the program aims to promote religious education and connect churches with faculty, now in its fourth year. John W. Edmonds helped organize the trip with ten named professors and instructors.
