Westhampton Students Tour Washington Capitol Visit National Figures

Forty four Westhampton seniors take a spring trip to Washington with alumnae guides. They meet Vice President Wallace and mix with national leaders on Capitol Hill. The itinerary includes the Capitol, Supreme Court, libraries, archives, and major galleries. Louise Morrissey wins the Senior Doodling Contest with an essay.

Westhampton Plans May Day Theme and Queen Reveal

Westhampton announces a Mother Goose based May Day with the Pied Piper hero in the Crooked Man house. The May Queen will be crowned at the end, with senior committee leaders and a full faculty panel directing tryouts in the Greek Theatre at 4 PM Monday.

Wiley At Vespers Speaker J Handley Wiley

The Reverend Professor J Handley Wiley will speak at vespers Sunday. He teaches sociology at the University of Shanghai and is an alumnus of the University of Richmond. Wiley did graduate work at the University of Chicago and went to China in 1921 as a Foreign Mission Board representative. His daughter Louise is a sophomore at Westhampton College.

KA Spring Galaxy and Phi Delta Theta Dance Gather Alumni

The KA spring galaxy with Richmond Collegians and Phi Delta Theta annual dances unfold tonight at the John Marshall Hotel Roof Garden. Chaperones include Dr and Mrs Holtzclaw, Mr and Mrs Pitt, Dr and Mrs Modlin, Mrs O'Flaherty, and Russ Kates and his band. The Phi Delta Theta event marks the fraternity's 93rd anniversary with blue and white decor and a 9 30 P.M. start. Richard Henry Little, former Chicago Tribune columnist, headlines the banquet with Dr Greer Baughan presiding.

Westhampton College elects reps to councils and board

Grace Norris defeated Frances Calisch for Day Student Representative to the College and Honor Councils. Barbara Lewis won Junior Representative to College and Honor Councils against Rose Kostuckian and Maxine Williams. Reba Booker beat Ruth Phillips for Junior Representative to Honor and Residence Councils. Althea Johnson elected to the Board of Publications for two years, defeating Louise Cardozo.

National Conference Call for Democracy in Education at Harvard

Seventy five leaders from the Student Christian Movement and college editors urged a National Conference for Democracy in Education at Harvard University on March 29 and 30. They call to defend free inquiry and campus rights, with topics including The Bill of Rights on the Campus and Notebooks and Pocketbooks. The sponsors include leaders from Harvard Yale Stanford and other colleges and organizations.

Ring Dance Queen Named Miss Liberty At VPI

Westhampton students nominate a candidate to be Miss Liberty, queen of the Ring Dance at Virginia Tech May 9 and 10. Juniors will dedicate the event to the principle underlying the National Defense Program Liberty and select a living symbol from Virginia Tech and invited representatives from Virginia and D C schools.

Abernethy Huxter Patterson Elected In School Elections

Abernethy Huxter and Patterson win the Senior Junior and Sophomore class elections at Westhampton before the holidays. Miss Abernethy will serve with Sara Goode as vice president. Louise Hall is secretary, Wilma Peters treasurer, Lucy McDonough song leader. Huxter led the juniors with Ann Oakes as vice president and Dolly Dorsey secretary.

Banquet Opens Interfraternity Visiting Period at Richmond College

The Interfraternity Council kicked off its third annual visiting period with a banquet at the Richmond College dining hall attended by about 185 students. Dr. Hubert M. Poteat of Wake Forest spoke on the role of fraternities in modern education and the duty to instill moral training. Kappa Alpha won the largest percentage present prize at 69 percent, Theta Chi had the most attendees with 28, and Dean Raymond B. Pinchbeck presided.

Richmond College Glee Club Tour Delayed And Planned State Trip

The Richmond College Glee Club cancels today’s trip to Virginia Interment College Bristol due to insufficient funds. A state tour is planned for spring with concerts at Madison and Mary Washington Colleges and a return engagement in Suffolk Virginia. Last year a Suffolk high school show yielded an admission price. this year a theatre venue is used. The group will hold its annual campus concert in April at Luther Jenkins theatre. On March 6 thirty five members traveled by bus on the Southern trip with concerts at Averett College Danville Salem Academy Winston Salem and Coker College Hartsville.
