Plan awards for head cheerleader service approved

The Athletic Council approved a plan to award class numerals and varsity monograms to head cheerleaders who complete a year of service, effective next fall. Owen Neathery will receive the head cheerleader sweater, and Griffin Garnett is slated for numerals 1086 and the 1986-86 head cheerleader role, with eligibility rules outlined for selections and tryouts.

Debating Team Sets Southern Trip for Munitions Topic

Westhampton College affirmative debaters head to Temple University Philadelphia University of Delaware Wilmington and Trinity to contest the munitions government control issue. Negative team led by Martha Jeter Lazenby and Virginia Kirk will face Hampden Sydney after beating William and Mary. Tau Kappa Alpha has supplied top members since 1927 with Marian Clark a standout.

Chamber Of Commerce Head To Speak Today

Col. Leroy Hodges, managing director of Virginia State Chamber of Commerce, will speak at Convocation on State Planning. Hodges, born in North Carolina, has led civic and rural development in NC and VA and has held roles in commerce education and international exhibitions.

Students vote in special election for Board of Publications

King and Laughon compete to fill the unexpired term of Charles Ryland ending March 1986. Voting runs today 9 to 3 in the Faculty Room. Results to be announced Saturday by President Poage. Installation of officers set for Monday March 26 at 12:30 in the Playhouse.

Conservatory Display of Blooming Plants at Biology Building

The Biology Department maintains a conservatory atop the building with flowering plants and botanical specimens. Visitors, unlimited hours, may view snapdragons caledulas flezias prim rows chrysanthemums begonias oil lilies and others but must not pick or harm plants. Do not enter the roof area accessed from the conservatory.

Harvard Botanist to Speak at Phoenix Club Address

Dr. William H. Weston Jr a Harvard botanist and professor will speak before the Phoenix Club on April 2. Weston held teaching and research positions at Harvard Western Reserve University Cuba Panama and the Cuba Sugar Club and has lectured widely across the United States. He is a fellow of the AAAS and a member of multiple scientific societies.

TKA Plans Tau Kappa Alpha Tapping Ceremonies

Richmond and Westhampton Colleges will jointly host tapping ceremonies for the Tau Kappa Alpha honorary forensic society. The event is tentatively set for Friday, April 12, with involvement by the two institutions and their students.

Richmond College Web deadline for 1936 yearbook payments and tickets

Subscriptions and representation fees for The Web must be paid or assigned by 3 o'clock this afternoon to avoid missing the annual. Richmond College and Westhampton show strong signups while the Law school commits to yearbooks. Spring dances feature Dan Gregory and Jimmy Poyner with Garrity and Collegians, tickets two dollars for the set of two dances and decorations require approval by Coach Thistlethwaite. Dancing runs Friday 9 pm to 1 am with a Saturday midnight close.

Woodfin Offers New Virginia History Course

Dr. Maude Woodfin associate professor in history will teach a new Virginia history course next semester. Open to seniors and graduate students in Richmond College and with content covering Jamestown to modern times the course replaces a colonial history class. Her research in eighteenth century Virginia informs the instruction and may lead to a forthcoming book.

Law Students Name New Head In Election

In the Law School Student Government race held Tuesday RB Granger West of Newport News won the presidency with 80 votes, defeating J Marker Dern of Littletown 26 votes. The contest was the only contested office, with C P Kearfott of Martinsville as Vice-President and 8 R Buxton of Newport News as Secretary and J L Ames of Lynbrook as Treasurer.

Watkins of Dublin Ga was elected president of the College Government Association at Westhampton on Tuesday March 12 This election starts the school year 1936 86 Candidates were Elizabeth Conwell and Margaret Watkins Elisabeth Conwell was chosen yesterday by the co ord student body as chairman of the Judiciary Board Watkins is a Miller High School graduate with honors She has held school offices and served on the English Club and Dramatic Association leadership She has lived in Richmond and currently dorms on campus She is on the Industrial Commission and is business manager of the Messenger Also played on class hockey and basketball teams She said she is pleased and humbled to lead following Anna Hallett Elections continue for two weeks with other offices to be chosen

Westhampton names Mary Pat Barly May Queen candidate

Mary Pat Barly of Richmond was chosen by Westhampton seniors to represent the school at the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester in April. She will serve as a princess. runner up was Helen Caulfield in a close contest among five nominees. The May Day pageant features a Toulouse setting with a Court of Love presiding over five royal beauties.

National student strike planned against wars and fascism

A nationwide student strike is planned for 11 a.m. on April 12 1935 led by the National Council of Methodist Youth Inter-Seminary Movement Middle Atlantic Division the Student League for Industrial Democracy the National Student League and the American Youth Congress. Leaders expect at least 100000 students from institutions including Vassar Harvard Johns Hopkins Amherst Smith UCLA University of California Los Angeles and Minnesota to join. Endorsing conferences include Oberlin College the Minnesota Youth Conference at St Paul and a University of Chicago gathering. Richmond College to Present Romeo and Juliet Tonight

The Musical Unit announces its spring concert with scenes from Romeo and Juliet. The cast includes Fred Lo as Romeo Frank Nunnally as Paris Samuel Bagby as Apothecary George Romney as Nurse Edward Canada as Tybalt Jin Robertson as Mercutio Curt Haug as Capulet. The program opens with religious numbers, followed by spirituals and a medley of college songs.

May Day Tryouts Scheduled Today

Underclassmen will try out for speaking parts in May Day this afternoon at four o'clock in the Greek Theatre if weather permits or in the Tower Room. Seniors tried out last Wednesday and rehearsals may begin next week under Miss Emily Brown.
