Varsity Fresh Wins Fourth Annual Prep Day Contests

Richmonds fourth annual Prep Day featured eight prep and high school games at Millliser Gymnasium. Fredericksburg beat Ashland 20 to 17. St Christopher topped South Boston 25 to 14. Thomas Jefferson edged Highland Springs after a five minute OT 46 to 47. John Marshall defeated Hargrave Military 24 to 20. Lee Staunton beat McGuires 29 to 25. Fork Union Military beat Benedictine 30 to 26. Richmond freshmen beat Medical B 40 to 10. Spider varsity opened season with a 6 to 21 win over Medical College five. Varsity Club dance followed with Mike Kents band providing music.

Senior Class Plans Winter Prom Financing and Dance

In a regular post holiday meeting the Senior Class voted to ask the Interfraternity Council to host a mid winter dance around the Junior-Senior Prom period. The council would receive all profits and cover losses. Each member pledged two dollars toward funding the class gift.

Miss Woodfin Hosts Tea for Freshman Class

Miss Woodfin entertained the Freshman Class at her Rose Road home on a Sunday afternoon in January. Miss Lough poured beverages while Amilla Jeffries helped. A crackling fire added warmth as the girls played novelty games and wrote New Year wishes on cards.

Varsity Dance Follows Richmond College Basketball Night

After a Richmond College versus Medical College of Virginia game and a prep school tournament, Millhiser Gym hosted a well attended Varsity Club dance. Mike Kent and the Richmond Collegians led scoring as they have recently, with the orchestra featured at this season’s dances. Students from Wargrave Military Academy Folk Union Military Academy Joby Marshall High St Christopher’s McGuire St Benedictine Ashland Fredericksburg and Highland Springs attended, marking the second successful Varsity Club event.

Literary Groups Elect New Officers This Month

Two literary societies held semi annual elections last Monday night. The S C Mitchell Society reelected Richard McCrone as president and Herbert Ruffin as Forensic Council representative with Bruce Dodd as vice president Bernard Hulcher as secretary and Emory Sauer as treasurer. Mu Sigma Rho re elected Roger Grant as president along with Richard Hicks as vice president Samuel Bagby as secretary and Lewis Collins as council representative. The Philologian Society schedules its election for January 30.

O. D. K. Leads in Student Voting at Richmond College

Richmond College students favored Omicron Delta Kappa over Phi Beta Kappa and the Varsity Club in the Collegian Web poll. ODK led with 588 points, PK with 382, and VC with 290, based on first and second choice ballots.

Local Debaters to Meet Penn Here

The University of Richmond team will debate the University of Pennsylvania in the A.M. Saturday in Room 1. The issue is Resolved That the United States Should Cancel the War Debts. Stuart Cook and Griffin Garnett will be the Richmond negatives. Afterward, Richmond will face the University of Pittsburgh on February 1.

New Biology Building Opens at Maryland Hall in Virginia

The 35 room fire proof Biology Building at Maryland Hall features general zoology on the first floor general botany on the second, a basement with dark rooms preparation rooms and a greenhouse on the roof. The Culture Room houses ovens refrigerators and boilers while the Herbarium awaits equipment. A spring dedication program with prominent speakers is planned.

Miss Scott Discusses History of Art for Westhampton Class

Miss Mary Wingfield Scott, former Westhampton College professor and traveler in Italy and the Levant, spoke to Miss Pauline Turnty’s History of Art class at her home. She outlined four main architectural styles influencing Roman buildings, tracing classic, Eastern, Romanesque, and Gothic influences through temples, basilicas, and churches and noting Italian restraint in vaulting.
