Chemistry Essay Prizes Announced for Freshmen

A.C. announces national contest by the American Chemical Society for university freshmen. Prizes total six awards of 500 dollars six of 3800 dollars and six of 200 dollars for top essays on health and disease relations and related topics. Submissions due to the secretary by March 1, 1929.

The Collegian prints a complete list of Rich and College faculty with local addresses and phone numbers at the request of Dean W. L. Prince. The published roster includes professors Bronson, Sherlock, Westhampton, Roul, Astrop, Caylor, Cornthwaite, Doering, Gaines, Goode and others with street addresses such as 343 Albemarle Avenue and 317 Grove Avenue, plus university and stop affiliations.

Dr S C Mitchell Recovers From Successful Operation

News from Richmond College reports Dr S C Mitchell history professor is recuperating well after a second operation. He is not yet permitted visitors and will return to his post at the start of the second semester. Faculty have covered his classes during absence.

Sigma Upsilon Elects Four New Members

Sigma Upsilon elected four new members at a recent meeting. New members are Professor A. B. Handy J. J. Leherer Jr Morrissette and Robert Quick. Three student members Scherer Morrissette and Quick have contributed to the Messenger since entering college. Attendees included Donal De Villicis C S Dodds Ben Cheatham J L Jones M S Shockley and active chapter members. High matters of art and literature were discussed.

Program Committee Plans Spontaneous Chapel Services

Dr. A B Rudd announces new chapel plan to replace set speeches with spontaneous worship. The Chapel Committee will meet early next week to organize outside speakers and announce weekly speakers starting the second semester. Mu Sigs invite Richmond College students to weekly meetings.

Byrd of U R Alumni Honored by Virginia Horticultural Society

At the society's Winchester meeting, Thomas Byrd, a University of Richmond Law School graduate now practicing in Winchester, was elected president for the year. He is brother to Governor Harry F. Byrd and explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd.

Compulsory Freshmen Track Under Way At Richmond College

Freshmen must take compulsory track as part of physical education with three hours of track work weekly. Sessions run 10, 11, 12, and 3 daily except Saturday, credit two semester hours, and continuation into spring holidays likely. Herman Dixon, manager, seeks assistant manager applicants.

Richmond College reports no severe flu cases. six students confined to rooms and many ill before Christmas have mostly returned. With exams near, sick students push to attend classes and resume studies at Westhampton and Richmond Colleges.

Students at Richmond College vote at their regular meeting to choose a new editor in chief for the Richmond Collegian. The vacancy follows R. P. Johnson resigning after an unusually long term, with current staff deemed capable to carry on the work.

Freshman Editorial Contest Closes Tomorrow at Noon

The Freshman Editorial Contest under Pi Delta Epsilon and sponsored by the Richmond Collegian ends tomorrow at noon January 12. Entries must be submitted to the librarian or any Pi Delta Epsilon or Collegian staff member. Judges will keep authors anonymous and assess papers on merit. Mu Sigma Rho Society Revises Rules and Elects Officers

A committee led by Walter Bennet proposed constitutional revisions for the Mu Sigma Rho Literary Society at a recent meeting. The body discussed the changes, votes will occur at the next session, and officers were elected with results to be announced next week. E. W. Eanes serves as president. Continued on Page 2.

Montague to Speak at Sunday Vespers

Rev R C Montague editor of the Virginia Churchman and Richmond city missionary will speak at Vespers Sunday January 13 from 6 50 to 7 30. Dr Montague is an honorary alumnus of the University of Richmond and an effective speaker. R E Loving chairs the Vesper Program Committee inviting students of both colleges to attend.

Rivals Below Par in University Players Holiday Show

The Senior Class dramatic production The Rivals was performed December 13 in Milchiser Gymnasium before a fair audience. Director Miss Emily Brown faced a slow, lengthy show while Morris Crawford's Little Symphony Orchestra supplied quality music. A tree topple incident briefly lifted spirits but did not salvage the evening.

Baltimore Alumni Chapter Plans Annual Meeting

The Baltimore alumni announce their annual meeting slated for Tuesday January 29 1929 in hopes of making it the chapter’s best yet. They will invite Richmond College men pursuing graduate work at Johns Hopkins University and Maryland Law School, plus other University graduates, to attend.
