The University of Richmond hosts its Annual High School Declamation Contest next Tuesday February 22 with new girls admitted on equal terms. Professor H B Handy directs the event which aims to boost declamation among state high schoolers and spur keen competition.
Westhampton Freshmen staged a vaudeville show at the Red Cross Building to raise funds for European relief. The program included a one act, songs and acts with students Lucy Ferguson Rita Baker Louise Johnston Eva Sanders Clara Black Virginia Clare Virginia Hamilton and others.
The Messenger staff and Richmond and Westhampton Colleges join to form a writers club under a merged staff. A constitution has been drawn and the group aims to correct criticisms of literary efforts while fostering constructive changes in the magazine.
University of Richmond declines a Yale offer for a week of training facilities for the Blue track team citing inadequate local facilities. Athletic officials consulted after receiving Yale's wire say 1922 would better suit a triangular meet at Stadium Field and Coach Dobson plans to invite Yale track and baseball squads to train in Richmond.
Following the joint debate arrangement with William and Mary the contestants for places on the William and Mary team began gathering material and preparing papers. On Tuesday evening in Chapel P A Edwards secretary of the debating and forensic council led the session.
The campus lists events from February 18 to 24 including Student Convention in Salem Virginia French Play at the Red Cross Building and History Club at Dr Mitchells home. Sports schedule features Spiders home games against Randolph Macon William and Mary and the University of Virginia.
Westhampton's basketball sextet will host the Y. W. C. A. team at 7 00 PM in the Red Cross Building. The team has had ample practice and aims for snappy contests, with community support urged for future games.
The Dobson Spiders split a four game stint, beating Richmond Athletic Club after triple overtime, then Hampden Sydney, but losing to William and Mary in Williamsburg. Wake Forest and North Carolina games followed tough battles, with guard suspensions affecting lineup but resilience shown.
The Chatham Training School Club holds its annual banquet at the Cafeteria with campus men and city alumni, plus an equal number of ladies. The program begins at 8 30 p m with speeches music and humorous stunts, followed by brief talks about the club and school. Forty two have signed to attend as of Tuesday.
