Walton Asks Body To Plan For College

Russell Walton president of the Richmond College Student Government proposed a planning commission to study campus needs and trends. The advisory body would sample student opinion, hold forums, survey student organizations, and map welfare plans without executive power, with delegates from Westhampton College and T. C. Williams Law School.

Fresh Sophomore Dance Planned March 3 at Millhiser Gym

A joint Freshman Sophomore meeting decided on an informal annual dance to be held March 3 in Millhiser gymnasium. James Turkington chairing the dance committee announced noted orchestras may play, with John Locke handling decorations Bob Courtney tickets and Joe Wornum publicity. The event aims to be the largest formal- style dance of the year and starts a campus spring dance series by fraternities.

Lawyers Dance Promises Fancy Richmond Law School Ball

The Student Government Association of the University of Richmond Law School will hold its annual spring dance on Friday March 20 at the Club Chatterbox in Hotel Richmond. Admission will be strictly bid.

Walton Plan for Student Commission Divides Richmond College

Student government president Russ Walton proposed a campus planning commission as a broader body to oversee projects across the three colleges. A cross section of thirty students showed majority support if politics is excluded and members are given real authority, while two opposed it and questioned its usefulness.

Art Lectures Begin April 3 at Cannon Chapel

Three outstanding lecturers announced for Art Emphasis month at the University. Dr George Boas of Johns Hopkins University will speak on The Formation of Modern Taste on April 8 with slides. Joseph G Reynolds Jr of Reynolds Francis and Rohnstock discusses Stained Glass and Cathedrals on April 10 using his slide collection. Edward B Rowan of the Federal Section of Fine Arts in Washington will address Contemporary Painting and Sculpture.

Peyton and Brandis Named Historians for Class Tributes

Moses Peyton of Richmond was made Historian of the Senior Class of 1939 by class president Robert Leitch and is a member of Alpha Mu Omicron at the University of Richmond. He succeeds Guyon Knight who did not continue studies this year. Royall Brandis, Collegian news commentator, is named Historian of the graduating class of 1940.

Prince L W Prince Elected VP of VA Colleges Association

Prince L W Prince professor of education at the University was elected vice president of the Association of Virginia Colleges at the meeting last Saturday held at Hotel Jefferson. He succeeds Dean C R Brown of Roanoke College who becomes association president this year. A Saturday discussion on What Constitutes Good Teaching in College from the Students Point of View stressed development and intellectual training and said the first two years should be for fundamental training while the last two years foster independent thinking.

Westhampton College senior show parodies Gone With the Wind

Westhampton College announces its 89 version of the senior show Away With the Breezes for March 3. Alice Evans leads plans with Ruby Danner and Evans writing the original script. New bits include Fernanda the Cow and a Greek Chorus.

Australians-H. R. Robson and F. F. Thone Debate Richmond College

Debaters H R Robson and F F Thone representing the National Union of Australian Students meet Richmond College on Wednesday to argue the negative side of ghosts. The broadcast from station WRTD 3:00 to 4:00 pm marks Richmond’s first international debate this year with Paul Saunier and John E Jordan leading the affirmative. Robson, a Sydney University law graduate, and Thoneman, a Melbourne University law student, recently toured Canada and previously debated for Australian universities and Trinity College. The tour is supported by the National Student Federation and the Australian Union of Students.

Phi Delta Theta Phi Delta Omega Initiation Festivities Planned

Exercises in Richmond and at the University of Richmond will restore the Virginia Delta Chapter to the national Fraternity. Registration at 10:00, luncheon at 12:30, initiation at 2:30 in Cannon Chapel, and a 6:30 buffet and ball with Joe Baldwin and his Melodiers.
