A wartime program forms two classes under Ralph Chappel to train draft age men in radio signaling and wireless telegraphy. Fifteen men signaled interest with potential growth, aiming to supply trained radio operators for national service and enhanced wartime productivity. A farming agriculture class is also planned, with both programs continuing on page four.
A Richmond College alumni committee launches the Million Dollar Campaign to raise 800000 for a modern gymnasium on campus. The drive, timed for fall 158, lists a roster of many alumni volunteers including Thomas B. McAdams as chairman and BE Loving as treasurer, with the slogan One Dollar a Month for Five Years from One Thousand Alumni to Build a Gymnasium for Alma Mater.
Richmond College honors men listed on the Field of Honor record serving in the war. Families, the college, the state, and the nation express pride as America looks to these individuals to right the wrongs of war and shape a better future.
Dr Garrrett HW Ryland spoke at the college Y M C A meeting on The Effect of War on Religion. He argued that Gladstone’s era strengthened Christian influence in Britain and that war vitalises faith guiding sacrifice purity and energy in support of war efforts. He contrasted English and American responses to German hostility and urged home front effort.
Editor Max Glass and associates begin work on the 1918 Spider amid war pressures reducing students and raising material costs. Despite handicaps, strong effort and cooperation aim to make the Spider the best yet with Benson Printing Co. of Nashville handling printing and engraving.
Loving and Garnett were elected to lead the Mes Senger as Master-in-Chief and Business Manager for the coming year. The Mu Sigma Rho Literary Society endorsed their shared tenure from April this season to March next year. Both are juniors with notable writing talent and strong involvement in college literary activities. Garnett previously served as Assistant Business Manager and plans to continue advancing society work.
Mr. Ackiss, longtime Y M C A secretary and Bible instructor at the college, has enlisted as a chaplain in the Navy. The move comes as another sorrowful wartime loss for the institution. he departed last Wednesday and his assignment location was not yet learned. President Boatwright hosted a farewell dinner Tuesday night with the Y M C A cabinet present.
Virginia led from start to finish in a 64 to 34 win over Richmond College at Payer Gym. Portway starred with 12 field goals and 3 free throws, while Pettway and Tuxey also contributed as Virginia seized control early and sustained the lead through the game.
The Spider quint travels to the Y M C A gymnasium in Richmond for a rematch with the same squad that beat them 40 to 19 Tuesday. Captain Dickerson leads Richmond Colle against Y M C A with Woodward Motley and Wallerstein in key positions.
