Eleven fraternities at the University of Richmond announced pledging 124 new members, mostly freshmen. Sigma Phi Epsilon led with 21 pledges, Theta Chi 18, and Phi Gamma Delta 13, with detailed pledges listed for each fraternity and students from multiple states and cities.
At the Virginia Intercollegiate Press Association convention held at Longwood College Farmville Roanoke Times Roanoke World News honored Collegian Kor Excellence in Newspaper Writing. The 1951 Web won originality in year book design and William and Marys Flat Hat led VIPA newspaper awards.
Freshman and senior classes present a talent show and informal dance to benefit the Foreign Student Fund. Cammie Freeman announces acts including a Jimmy Durante impersonation Dagmar from the Jerry Lester show, a Tennessee hillbilly band a New Orleans jazz band and four Charleston experts. The event occurs in Keller Hall College Government Room with a grand finale and follows with the senior class dance The Jolly-Up.
The Richmond ROTC rifle team lost their debut intercollegiate match on November 30 to Penn State College. Top scorers were J. H. Thomas, J. B. Phillips, Charles S. Bingham, P. B. Hood Jr., and E. B. Lautensliger. Instructors praise the effort and expect improvement with practice.
Westhampton College’s Athletic Association prepares for its annual Snowball with President Lou Tull leading. The December 15 semi formal, in Keller Hall, features Sue Peters publicity Janet Johnston decorations Joe Fugate orchestra and Ann Tharpe refreshments. Tickets go on sale Monday from AA board members.
Pat Stump, a Westhampton freshman, won first prize in an essay contest sponsored by Thalhimers in cooperation with Air France and the French National Airline. The eight day Paris trip included tours of Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, Versailles, and fashion salons, plus a wardrobe and keepsakes provided by Thalhimers. Barbara Bennett joined as Youth Consultant for the trip, which began with a January luncheon and culminated in a March departure from New York to Orly Field Paris.
The Baptist Student Union invites everyone to join Christmas caroling on Friday December 14 at 7 00 pm. Gather at the Barrier at North Court and sing at homes and dorms on campus followed by a marshmallow roast by the lake.
University of Richmond hosts a traditional Christmas party in Keller Hall on Sunday December 19 at 8:00 PM. The program includes Santa Claus puppetry, The Littlest Angel reading, multilingual carols, and a male quartet with refreshments and campus gifts.
El Picaro the Spanish Club of Westhampton College will host a Christmas dinner at Ewart's Cafeteria on Monday December 10 at 6 00. All Spanish students invited and the price is 1 00 per plate. Reservations may be made with any club officer.
Seven students work on the annual University of Richmond Student Directory to be sold tomorrow by the YMCA and YWCA. The booklet lists student addresses for Richmond and Westhampton Colleges, the Business and Graduate Schools, professor offices, campus officials, a campus map, and University phone numbers. Price is 30 cents per copy.
Stan Martin of Josten will be at the Dry Dock at 11 30 a m Saturday to take school ring orders. Orders also accepted by Charles Tulloch RC Junior Class Lynn Dickerson RC Senior Class and Jim Frye Business School.
The Westhampton and Richmond College International Relations Clubs will hold a joint meeting Monday December 10 at 7 p.m. in the Faculty Sitting Room of North Court. Four students Dorothea Mallau Germany Antoinette Heneyck Puerto Rico Kenneth Hodder England Hing Chung Tang China will share impressions of the United States.
University of Richmond students and dates will dance to Mark Troxell and his orchestra in the Virginia Room of Hotel John Marshall for the All-State PiKA Ball hosted by Omicron Chapter. Chapters from Washington and Lee UVA Hampden Sydney and William and Mary attend the alumni sponsored event. The formal dance begins at 9 p.m. with the Old Dominion Dreamgirl of Pi Kappa Alpha as the highlight.
Miss Barbara McCraw of Westhampton College will carry Omicron’s hopes at the PIKA Dreamgirl selection amid a ball crowd of University students and dates. Dick Fitz chairs the ball. Linwood Matthews handles decorations. Charles Wiltshire directs publicity. Roger Gaulkins manages seating as garnet and gold decorates the joint affair. Richmond College Quartet will perform five popular numbers.
