Noted artist and author to receive University honors

Ellen Glasgow and Charles Hoffbauer will receive honorary degrees from the University of Richmond at a Friday convocation on April 29. Glasgow, a Richmond native and novelist, will earn Doctor of Laws. Hoffbauer will receive Doctor of Fine Arts for his famed Confederate memorial murals. The ceremony, featuring Dr Douglas Freeman and President F W Boatwright, will include an academic procession and will be broadcast on WRNL.

SPEs Open Tea Dance Becomes Campus Wide Event

Sigma Phi Epsilon plans the first campus wide tea dance at Milhiser Gym this afternoon from 4 to 6 30. The informal event welcomes men and women as the Blanket Bid dance tradition expands with Kappa Sigma and Theta Chi joining open dances this year. Decoration chair Tommy Johnson notes royal purple and red decor while Roy Dennis and his band provide the music.

Ducky Dorm Easter Ducks Attract Attention In A Section

Malcolm Glenmore Evans of Richmond keeps two toy ducks named Dr. Boatwright and Dr. Pinchbeck in his A-5 dorm. The ducks were gifts from his uncle at Easter and sparked curiosity about the faculty lookalikes as they plump on mash under Mrs. Gordon’s scrutiny.

Pi Delta Epsilon taps two Westhampton women in chapel

Westhampton College honors Dr. Maude Woodfin and Natalye T. Babcock by inducting them into Pi Delta Epsilon in a chapel ceremony on Monday. Woodfin, associate professor of Political Science and Economics, has served on the Board of Publications since 1927. Babcock, former Collegian reporter and editor, will be Westhampton editor 88 89.

Date Set for Class Elections by College Government

George proposes a definite election date after the first Monday in May. The rule, approved by Dean Pinchbeck, sets May 8 as this year’s election day and requires campaign managers to submit candidate lists with nicknames and offices. Ballot and bulletin preparation will follow this list, moving elections from the Alumni office to a new site under review.

Wear Your Tux to the Friday Play

The Players urge attendees to wear formal attire to Friday’s play noting many will wear tuxedos and evening dresses. Arrive before the dance and expect an on time ending.

Varsity Bowery Ball Set for April 30 in Milhiser Gym

Roy Dennis and his orchestra will provide music for the Varsity Club Bowery on April 30 in Milhiser Gymnasium. Dancing runs from 9 to 12 with costumes and derby hats encouraged. Tickets are available in advance from Varsity Club members.

London Assurance staged by University Players tonight

The University Players present Dion Boucicaults London Assurance at 8:30 in the University Playhouse with Mary Sue Carter and Carlson Thomas in lead roles. The cast includes Charlotte Lee Hodges Jessie McElroy Owen Tate and Walter Brock, with Marcia Silvette designing two interior sets and a garden scene and the wardrobe staff preparing full costumes.

Famous Band to Play Two Dances on June 7 at University

Hal Kemp and his world famous orchestra will perform in two dances on Tuesday June 7 at the university tea dance with a second top flight band likely for Monday June 6. The signing was authorized by the Music Corporation of America. The Kemp unit recently topped charts and appeared on motion pictures and radio.

Johnson former editor in chief of the Richmond Collegian and former assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Richmond will speak on Electrons and Matter in the physics lecture room on Wednesday April 27 at 4 PM The lecture will be illustrated and open to the public with no admission charge
