Berkner High School photography students will display their work in June under guidance from instructor Gene Craig. Charles Turner, acting for Richardson Centennial, approached the classes to provide photographic displays for the event.
A violent weather night hit Richardson with wind rain and lightning, injuring no one but damaging two buildings and prompting about 10 fire calls. Lightning struck homes at 1208 Cherokee and 1211 Cheyenne, while roofs and water damage plagued 517 Sterling Drive and 405 N Plano Road. Plano Fire fought a late night blaze at Carl Uland Egg Farm on Highway 5 destroying a large building and 12,000 chickens. A 12 year old was in a bicycle car crash on Belt Line Road and a motorcycle theft was reported at 106 E Arapaho. The scene also highlighted Richardson Industrial Week featuring a student photography project at Berkner High School.
The Richardson Daily News advertising and editorial offices will be closed Saturday and Monday to allow staff to spend the long weekend with their families. There will be no paper published Monday Memorial Day. Offices reopen at 8 am Tuesday morning.
Richardson Chief of Police J W Golden, parade chairman, outlines entries for the Centennial Parade set for Saturday June 16. Gather at 3 30 p m at First Baptist Church parking lot Greenville and Phillips streets with move out at 4 p m as the march travels north on Greenville then east on Arapaho to Dorothy. Entries should include name address telephone number organization and number of participants plus category Antique Cars Commercial Floats Non Commercial Floats Marching Units Animal Drawn Units Motorized Units or Decorated Vehicles.
Richardson churches push multi phase building programs to handle rapid population growth. First Christian will finish a 400-seat sanctuary this summer at 610 E Main, costing 240000 dollars. Nazarene plans a 475-seat sanctuary and enlarged education space, due mid June with July dedication. Trinity Baptist adds a 300-seat auditorium next week for 70000 dollars. Canyon Creek Presbyterian advances Phase III adding 16000 sq ft and a 500-seat sanctuary at 400 W Campbell Rd, costing 460000. Canyon Creek Baptist moves from a school to Custer Parkway with a four phase plan including a drive-in church and a 2000-seat final sanctuary. Community growth and evangelical outreach cited as drivers by pastors.
The Richardson City Plan Commission discussed University Estates North plat approval and a Fred and Harold Peek project. Residents near Neil Cotton's Carriage Place protested a TP and L right of way street and parking, prompting a plan to relocate parking and reroute the street away from nearby homes.
Pam Hayes, star of Beginner's Luck at Windmill Dinner Theater, staying at Gatehouse Apartments on Spring Valley Road, misplaced her two pound long haired black chihuahua with tan markings. She asks anyone who has seen the dog to call 234-6224 or the theater at 239-9104.
Eleven Richardson area students were honored at the Nineteenth Annual Future Unlimited Banquet held in the Statler Hilton. Thomas Kennedy of Richardson High received two JA awards and top president of the year, while Ralph Green of Lake Highlands earned 100 for top salesperson. Mary Cooper of Richardson High was top speaker and will tour the National Achievers Conference. Other recognitions included top officers at J.J. Pearce and various scholarships and awards for leadership and sales records.
