Lake Highlands Teachers Named for June Petroleum Institute
Thirteen North Central Texas teachers received fellowships to attend the Ninth Annual Petroleum Institute for Educators set for June 7-24 at the University of Houston. Participants include S Longley of Lake Highlands Jr High Dallas who also won the Core Laboratories fellowship and earned a Texas B S. The institute, for science mathematics and social studies teachers, features industry expert lectures on exploration production manufacturing and transportation with three graduate education credits offered on completion.

Richardson women pumper team leads NT Firemen meet
Richardson Fire Department women's pumper team won first in their division at the North Texas Firemen’s Association meet in River Oaks near Fort Worth, with Lake Worth second and Duncanville third. The six member squad, made up of wives of Richardson firefighters, will compete in the state contest in June.

German Lab Worker Dies After Richardson Gas Blast
Sabine Zierau, 23, a German lab assistant at the Graduate Research Center, died of burns at Parkland Hospital hours after a Richardson gas leak explosion in her South Bowser apartment. She had smelled gas Friday night and lit a cigarette before the blast, which damaged the apartment and sent shards onto Frances Way. Her mother had arrived from Germany as officials investigated the accident.

Jack Ayres Sets Sights On District Lions Crowns
Richardson High School senior Jack Ayres won two preliminary Lions Club speech contests and advances to a district finale in Duncanville for a chance at a $1,000 prize. Alexis Pedden of Arlington High took second in city judging. Ed Hutson chairs the event. Ayres received a $25 bond from the local club.
