Residents away on election day must vote absentee by 4 pm Tuesday at the School Administration Building 400 S Greenville Ave. A bond proposal of 20 million dollars would fund major additions to 11 schools a new high school two junior highs four elementary schools and 15 central libraries with a 12 cent tax increase over three years.
The Richardson Noon Lions Club meets Tuesday at Youngbloods Restaurant on Central Expressway for noon lunch featuring Jim Lowe WRR Dallas program director and announcer. Lowe hosts a 6 9 a m weekday show has held that slot ten years and is known as Big Tex voice at the State Fair. Billboard credits him with driving 63 percent of area album sales and notes his editorial-page quotes in a Dallas paper.
Secretary of Transportation Boyd announces possible government measures to reduce air pollution from the forthcoming Regional Airport set to open in 1972. County writer notes officials aim to clear the air as aviation activity expands.
Alan S Boyd announced at a Dallas meeting that the Federal Aviation Administration will spend 250000 dollars over three years to study cleaner jet engines and fuels and establish emission standards. The plan, presented to 10 county business and government leaders, aims to reduce jet pollution and protect the environment while integrating transportation as a single system.
Richardson joins 146 Texas cities in collecting a one percent city sales tax starting Monday. The tax adds to the existing two percent state tax, totaling three percent. Exemptions include autos, equipment, groceries, housing, medicines, and tobacco. The city expects about $90,000 yearly to fund operations and avoid frequent property tax increases.
East Texas State University Chorale under Ken Frerichs will give a 2 p.m. concert at Richardson High School with Bach Brahms and Wheat works. The 42 member ensemble, featuring accompanist Maurice Thompson Jr., will also perform at H Grady Spruce El Centro Arlington Woodrow Wilson and North Dallas High Schools on successive days. Public invited.
Richardson residents and Texas motorists have one extra day to buy their 1933 license plates. The law requires plates by midnight Monday. Two Richardson locations will sell plates Monday from 8 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. and everyone in line at 4 30 will be served before closing. Locations are the sub courthouse at 1411 West Belt Line and the office at 224 Campbell Road Village.
The Richardson Committee for Good Schools issues its full endorsement of the $20 million school bond election set for Saturday April 6. Chairman Avery Doc Curl says the bond addresses growth and air conditioning needs, noting the prior election did not solve crowding from 2400 annual new students. He urges enthusiastic support to meet the community’s educational responsibilities.
The Richardson Chamber of Commerce reorganizes its 1968 program into five divisions led by Vice President Dr. Werner J. Beyen. The Commercial Division includes five committees: Membership Meeting, Contact Club, Long Range Planning, and Research and Information. Dale Williamson leads Membership Meeting to host five luncheons and the January 1969 banquet. Don Scott chairs the Contact Club aiming to recruit 120 new members and boost retention, while expanding civic memberships to strengthen community spirit. Long Range Planning is new, chaired by Charles T. Boyle, tasked with a city future study and trend analysis.
